100% agree. I think these str values are too PC centric, lots of npcs don't have anywhere near the stats that a PC routinely has.

It was the 3 spear attacks straight up that caused the reaction.

Again just wanted to stress. gladiators are actually not high damage for their CR, in fact they are bottom of the normal damage range for a CR5.

1) Get strength or like a monk that can use dex for grapple 2) Take athletics proficiency through class, background, feat, whatever. and done. now sure you can go for expertise to really lock in but you really don't have to. Even that gives you a very solid grapple against a lot of opponents.
