    [Jan] What are you watching?

No need. I took the player portion back to the store this weekend and exchanged it for one that will actually play DVDs. Now life is good. Now I am happy. :D I just finished Alias season 2 yesterday. Wow. What a cool, cool show. I don't think that I'll be able to wait until season 3...

What 2005 movie are you looking forward to the most?

It's PJ's King Kong all the way for me! I am beyond super jazzed for it, especailly after seeing how PJ handles giant monsters in his LotR films. Peter Jackson can make giant monster films for the rest of his days and I think I'd be very happy... J. R.

    [Jan] What are you reading?

Conan, and Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser? Best stuff around! Excellent choices. If you're in a swords & sorcery mood you also can't go wrong with Karl Edward Wagner's Kane books. SFBC has them in an omnibus called Gods In Darkness, I believe. Awesome stuff. Remember that Molly Hatchett album...

    [Jan] What are you reading?

Simonson's Thor is THE BEST! Good inspiration for gaming material as well! I need to go pick up the Thor Visionaries Vol. 2 book today...

    [Jan] What are you watching?

I'm trying to finish the last disc of Season 2 of Alias but life keeps conspiring against me! The new DVD Home theater system I just bought is displaying the 'H02' error code right out of the box and won't play any DVDs! Arrghh...!!

    Upcoming movies for 2004

Same deal as with all of Batman's villains, like the Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, et al--they're not bullet-proof either, but they don't tend to stand around and just let cops shoot at them either. While Doc Ock HAS used his arms to deflect bullets before he's much more likely to pick up something...

    Best movies of 2003

In no particular order, my favorites were: American Splendor LotR: Return of the King Kill Bill Vol. 1 School of Rock X2: X-Men United Out of the films above I really recommend American Splendor--it's not necessarily my favorite for the year, but it's the one most folks would be likely to...

[spoilers request] Who is "Keyser Soze"?

Part of the problem with films like these is that you'll read reviews, or hear people say things like, "You'll never figure out the ending of this one!" I remember phrases like this going in to movies and will often try to figure out what's what. It turns into a challenge. Because someone had...

Why wasn't that in the movies?

Easy answer: Gandalf's not a D&D wizard. If you had to make him up for D&D he'd be more of an Expert/modified Paladin or Fighter with the Istari template. His magic is innate, not learned, and divine, rather than arcane.

Question about the Witch King in LOTR

Hunh. Makes me want to reread the books AND see the movie again. That's pretty cool.

Are women just bored of the rings?

Not everything is for everyone. For example, neither my parents nor my grandparents would care at all for LotR. If a story can't happen in the 'real' world they simply have no time for it. This seems to be the situation with this critic as well, but instead of stating it thusly she's decided...

Searching for Hercules (no..not Kevin Sorbo...)

It's definitely the Lou Ferrigno films that you're looking for. Try this link: http://members.tripod.com/~bugaev/ If you find them on video, I think that you may find that they don't hold up too well... :(

Sky Captain -- anyone heard of this?

Try DC's Blackhawk comics. It's not directly based on them, but it certainly pulls more than a little bit of inspiration from them. The giant robots are more a 40's-50's robot design, not anime, but to be fair both Big O and Giant Robo are inspired by this style of robot design as well. I...

The Oscar Buzz Thread! (Oscar Nominees Announced!)

Interesting. My father also served in Viet Nam (and has bullet riddled clothing and a medal or two still as a reminder) and he thought that Platoon was terrible. In his words it was, "A buncha crap." OT, but the bullet riddled trousers mentioned above are absolutely amazing. After being air...

    Guilty Pleasures

The only time that I've ever even come close to crying in a movie was at the end of the Iron Giant and for pretty much the same reasons. To this day I still get that lump in my throat and my eyes get all watery when I watch it.

    Worst movies ever....

Amazing. Quick Change is one of my all-time favorite comedies. My friends and I quote this movie pretty often, despite the fact that it's been a while since any of us have seen it, and we long for the day when it will finally be put out on DVD. Different strokes, and all that, I guess.

[SPOILERS] THE Return of the King Thread

Hey, don't get me wrong--it IS a good review. I just think that it's funny that Ebert would gripe about Gandalf being a powerful warrior, 'cuz, you know, even though he defeated a demon of the Old World single-handedly and is a Wizard and all, he LOOKS like an old man. Plus, his overall praise...

[SPOILERS] THE Return of the King Thread

You should listen to him complain on the Ebert & Roeper show about Gandalf being so spry and vital considering the fact that he's an 'old man.' http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/movie-1127213/reviews.php?critic=columns&sortby=default&page=1&rid=1229652 You know, after Gandalf's fight with...

[SPOILERS] THE Return of the King Thread

I just got back from Trilogy Tuesday myself. Things I really dug: * Everybody gets a chance to be in the spotlight in this one. The last movie seemed to be very Aragorn & friends-heavy, and this one seems more 'even' in respect to screen time for the characters. It was nice to see more of...

    Guilty Pleasures

There are a LOT of films I love that most folks don't, but I don't feel guilty about watching them. For example, I LOVE Japanese giant monster films. I love them so much that I cannot feel guilty for enjoying them. Instead, I simply pity those who don't have as much fun with them as I do...
