D&D General When the fiction doesn't match the mechanics

Component costs and economics in general. In a land with very few diamonds a smaller diamond is worth more to the locals compared to a similar sized diamond in a land where diamonds are plentiful. This can be extrapolated to all items with a cost in D&D.

    Portal Fantasy Idea

The constant missing persons issue, scientific inquiry, interviews about the future, etc will be a big part of this one over the long-term. I can also see that being a neat hook. "We'll pay you $20 million if you can steal the future tech from Lord BBEG's keep and help us reverse engineer it."...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] What can D&D 5E learn from video games?

Limit Breaks kind of reminds me of the GYRO (green, yellow, red, out) system found in the Sentinel Comics rpg. You have certain abilities available to you based on what color you are in, which also acts as a health tracker. You can only use abilities in your current color tier or earlier tiers...

D&D General Traps, Agency, and Telegraphing Dangers

Traps are tricky. I lean towards a very limited number of traps that are telegraphed in my dungeons. This has more to do with how boring I find the gameplay of constantly checking for traps than anything else. I also really hate traps that don't make sense. One example that really irks me in...

    Portal Fantasy Idea

There are two settings from Monte Cook that could work really well here. Numenera is a setting that is a billion years in the future and technology is mostly seen as magic. The locals have roughly medieval technology, but a scavenged piece of tech fashioned into a belt might let you levitate...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] What can D&D 5E learn from video games?

This mostly came out of my dislike for the dragon breath recharge mechanic in 5e. I don't like that the recharge can happen on the dragons turn and the players have no chance to react to it. I wanted the recharge roll to come at the end of their turn. From that came the idea to also let a dragon...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] What can D&D 5E learn from video games?

That's a pretty solid list in the OP. Telegraphing: this is something I only got to implement for a little before handing over the DM reins. Having boss monsters use an action, bonus action, reaction, etc to telegraph their next turn's action is something video games do way better than 5e. For...

Unique British aspects of D&D in the UK?

I'm in the Seattle area and I've noticed more and more roundabouts being put in over the last 20ish years. I really appreciate them on the backroads between towns because stopping at a 4-way with no one else in sight is annoying and inefficient. I've visited the UK a couple times and the sense...

    D&D 5E (2014) Question from a newbie about cantrips

To my knowledge, if you know a spell you always add your proficiency bonus to attack rolls. Doesn't matter where it comes from.
