D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

...dude. this book was not available in any official capacity between the time it went out of print and WotC started selling the pdf. none of the books from 1st ed. era were terribly expensive at this time, they're not gonna skyrocket in price now.

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

I also doubt the title would have changed, Oriental was still problematic back then but people were more okay about it at the time. I'd imagine suggestions back then might be like "don't treat us like weird exotic people" or "not all of us know martial arts, you know that right?". I could...

AD&D 1E About the Asian contributors to Oriental Adventures, or Who even were these guys?

well alright. I appreciate the picture. a few things I notice: 1) very heavily skewed toward Japanese things, though given the history of this book I guess I shouldn't be surprised. 2) aside from primary sources most of the books by Asian authors are about specific aspects and culture, like...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

I mean that seems fair. at the same time it's not like Asian Americans are so far removed from their heritage as to not have meaningful contributions. actually, given that the book was going to primarily be sold in the US they should've felt a little behooved to get at least some Asian...

AD&D 1E About the Asian contributors to Oriental Adventures, or Who even were these guys?

I mean if they did actually provide content I feel like they would have been credited as such, and not just with "critiquing and improving" (though I will say I am personally familiar with providing written content without receiving credit). as it's mentioned their inclusion was rushed, so even...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

what part of "you can still buy a print copy" do you not understand? that's not piracy. getting a pdf is piracy but has a very different context when that item isn't officially available anymore. aw geez, you post all this and of course I only read it after I make a separate thread. I was...

AD&D 1E About the Asian contributors to Oriental Adventures, or Who even were these guys?

I made this post in another thread about asking actual Asian people what they thought about Oriental Adventures, which as an Asian American myself I appreciated a lot, especially given how dismissive some people are about opinions from actual Asian Americans on OA. the OP brought something up...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

"God complex"? I never said no one should read it, I said WotC should stop selling it. how is that saying others shouldn't read it? keep in mind there are many intact copies that still exist in the world that can be bought online or in physical stores and pdf is fairly easy to find on the...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

they didn't have "expertise" though, they're called "the players" and are only credited as offering some critique on the manuscript. not only that, but they're all Japanese, and don't seem to have the level of knowledge to give a cultural critique to the entire book. wtf is "special knowledge"...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

hmm, let me see, someone early on in this thread brought up a "stereotype" about Asian people being taught not to raise problems, to which I replied "oh, yeah, even my own very Americanized Asian mother told me that the loudest person is the one who gets in trouble" and even how other Asian...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

yeah, I do appreciate the thanks. also, look I know where you're coming from but 1) while it is bad to make blanket statements about a group of people, it's also a little colorblind to say certain cultural things just aren't true. I confirmed what someone said earlier, that my own very...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

so I kinda want to come back to this bit: who exactly are these people? who is this group of individuals who apparently comprise a large chunk of the entirety of Asian people credited in an official D&D release? maybe I'll make a new thread about this—haha jk that sounds exhausting. without any...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

really stopping the sales of books like OA should be considered part and parcel of addressing the larger issues surrounding D&D. it's like the simplest part of resolving these issues. I've seen memes and whatnot on Facebook about how the removal of certain statues in the US are just a...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

idk at this point I'm all for removing it from the store. not like a pdf is hard to obtain otherwise. I will say though, I find it funny how OA is both so trivial that I shouldn't worry about it being sold, but also so important that if WotC removed it from the store it'd be the worst decision...

D&D 5E (2014) How should be the future Oriental Adventures.

good for... them, we just had a discussion of how applying an honor system to any Asian setting is an example of Orientalism. if you were trying to emulate a specific culture that had a system like that, then okay, but not every Asian culture has this.

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

...........................................you do realize it's entirely possible to be concerned about this and other WotC related issues right? dealing with OA is just part of a larger issue. nope, you don't get to decide whether or not people like me think it's a problem. I highly doubt this...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford Talks D&D Alignment Changes

oh no, I know they've been around for a while, but it still feels the case that if anything feels like it came from a video game then that's no good, y'know even if that thing started in D&D, made its way into games, and then came back into D&D. I mean Planescape was a thing before World of...

D&D 5E (2014) How should be the future Oriental Adventures.

??? no? to my understanding Toshiro Mifune actually received a lot of flack from Japanese audiences for being in Shogun, and the show itself wasn't well by them either.

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

man I don't want to throw a fireball at him, he did some actual research and while I might not 100% agree with everyone's take they all bring up some very good points to consider when thinking about Asian stereotypes and racism. the people trying to drown out actual Asian opinions though...
