OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Arcanum Worlds Canada has this to say regarding their Raiders of the Serpent Sea Kickstarter. “OGL This does not and will not affect Raiders of the Serpent Sea directly. I am confident reason will prevail. Unfortunately, it has affected the availability of contractors I was relying upon at this...

I think they got what they wanted

Not if you are beholden to shareholders to build an IP fortress and want to lock in under-compensated creators. Then have a license that locks that created content in on your property.

I think they got what they wanted

I believe the OGL update was intended to coincide with the future VTT and will make far more sense when viewed as a necessary part. That WotC management expected the future VTT will be attractive in its own right to draw designers to create material for the unreleased VTT, not so much about...

D&D 5E (2024) New leak looks real bad

Growing “Where we go one we go all” vibes in this whole “new leak”.

D&D 5E (2024) New leak looks real bad

I’m perfectly willing to wait see the actual full list of offerings for $30.

D&D 5E (2024) New leak looks real bad

I’d propose to the shareholders that WotC could be better managed by an AI bot.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

If the is bigger than the OGL is just “schemes to make the coming WotC-run VTT have a competitive advantage” I’ll be like “that was obvious from everything before”.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Is the $30/mo supposed to include article content like Arcadia now that it has been killed off by design? If it is ”Like Arcadia content, but actually accessible in the coming official VTT”… I’m just, eh.

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

Over ten thousand would be another common way of phrasing it. Double (2) digits, triple (3) digits, so 5 digits would be over 10,000 (5 digits).

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

An unreleased product (VTT) doesn’t need support staff yet.

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

I want to see someone come up with the Duck Season Rabbit Season gif but swap OGL deauthorized!/OGL reauthorized! With WotC vs Community.

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

Someone should create a Twitter bot that deauthorizes the 1.0a OGL at midnight then authorizes 1.0a for another 24 hours. Edit: or in an I’m Spartacus move everyone on social media add “I authorize OGL 1.0a” in their handle or signature.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Indeed. It is a common tension among shareholders between those wanting long term returns, and others demanding immediate value. In the past few decades short term value stripping has gotten headlines.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

This has the feeling of stumbling towards a license to a yet-to-be-revealed Steam-like digital toolset with a lock in that what is created under this isn’t promiscuous on other platforms.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

The open question might be whether new material will be allowed under 1.0a.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Yeah, we’ll see if the OneOGL also says the 1.0a cannot be used for new content. But a parsing of that could make that plausible.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

This seems the core language. “The next OGL will contain the provisions that allow us to protect and cultivate the inclusive environment we are trying to build and specify that it covers only content for TTRPGs. That means that other expressions, such as educational and charitable campaigns...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ACTUALLY use 3rd Party Books?

Yup. A PC currently runs a Titanheart Sorcerer from an Arcadia issue. The characters made abundant use of stronghold and retainer rules from Strongholds and Followers. I’ve customized magic items nearly every loot trove with magic items that have “+”s using some 3rd party magic item...
