Draw Steel: Fake variety helps no one

Don’t forget that each class has secondary triggers for resource gain though and also everybody gets more = victories. Like, a Null gets 2 discipline per round; but also gets 1 if an enemy in your null field uses a MA; and 1 if the director uses a Malice. So there’s some “when do I want to go”...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

If the core design of your system requires players to give a little bit of a crap, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. Can other more dedicated players pick up the slack and toss out advice even here? Yeah. But as soon as you have Triggered abilities that go beyond OAs, you need people who are...

Huh? Stuff like "Never back down" is amazing for social situations, for dealing with conditions, for facing risky circumstances and persevering. There's lots of examples in the book just like it.

"never back down" is a fantastic Experience? Says a lot about your background + really usable, not unlike a lot of the "phrase" or "characteristics" experiences.

I mean a lot of this is streamlined 4e, but it’s all trimmed down to be more evocative and, dare I say, cinematic. Like I love the mental image of a Talent getting a good mental grasp on somebody and yeeting them into somebody else and knocking them both around. That’s amazing.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

I really love how up front it tries to be about what this game is as presented.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Well yeah, I would never push a game like PF2 or DS! on people I know don’t want to engage with rules. That sounds like a miserable experience for all concerned.

Was reflecting on the design of this as I was driving in, having digested a fair bit of player and monster abilities from the DT Quick Start yesterday along with reading through the short form rulebook, and I think this might be one of the best links of mechanics and fiction in a...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I was referring to how “make an additional GM move” is “do anything the game suggests a GM can do.” Thus what you can spend fear on is actually “everything the game allows you to do if it feels dramatically appropriate in this moment.” Additionally, whenever the spotlight pivots back to the GM...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Because it’s side based I-Go-You-Go combat, there’s going to be at least a little bit of back and forth and plenty of examples of that being intentional in the book. It wants you to do quick coordination and teamwork that’s aware of mechanics, and then translate that back into the fiction to be...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

I was telling the group tonight as we were talking through games to try how impressed I was that DS! very quickly shows that there’s win conditions other then “kill em all.” You very quickly get things like "use a maneuver to determine the magic thing is causing the problem, and you can deal...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

I can't speak to the specific scenario this was in reply to, but the DS! Quick Start adventure setup is created specifically to teach the rules in slow manageable chunks with encounter designs that get progressively more complex and open to avoid just this sort of thing; as well as teach GMs via...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Well, I’m going to run a few test sessions of Delian Tomb for one of my groups. Should be able to get some opinions on subject because one player does PF2e every week and loves tactical gameplay; one said “huh, wonder if it’ll actually be fun to play unlike PF2” and one is an OSR / narrative...

GM Move: "Use a PC's Backstory Against Them" / "Show the Collateral Damage" / "Reveal an Unwelcome Truth" can lean into an Experience, but isn't quite a Compel from how I understand that mechanic. Note though "Make an additional GM move" is extremely broad.

“Really narrative D&D” - a new RPG genre?

I think there's also a split between "D&D the actual mechanical game that's gone through a number of iterations and grown to be a highly combat sub-system focused design that everybody has a favorite version of" vs "D&D, the fictional genre of related media that has grown up over the decades and...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Are you playing the playtest adventure (based on the encounters you described it sounds like it)? The Delian tomb "Start Here" packet pregens all have an excellent assortment of skills. Also, I wonder if a GM coming from a more narratively open game or who has experience running later design...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

Or, conversely, they did some deliberate planning to try and avoid excess stock based on anticipated demand and sales exceeded their projections. @Morrus can you shed some light on how long it usually takes to get a large scale hardcover print run spooled up / shipped to distributors / back in...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I dont believe the CR business group has gone out there and announced "we plan to take X% of market share!" or "our Press unit is an utter failure unless it turns $6MM in sales this year!" or anything. Edit: the most they've said is it's a "major part" of their business plans. What you can read...

Maybe one of the “details TBD” adventures will be aimed to extend one of the starting situations stuff each frame presents into 10-15ish hours of play thing.

Trimmed down rule book? Dropping that away from a hardcover might work. There’s space for the Sablewood to become an actual set of Situations with a bunch of prompts for the GM to ask player input in how the narrative flows. A good level 1-3 flow or something, with ideas where you could go next...
