D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

Thanks for the writeup! I have access through a buddy who shared them with me on D&DBeyond, but since I don't use DDB for the games I run, I am still on the fence whether or not I should get the books on Roll20 or physical, since that's what I use for my online and in person games. For me the...

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

Was there anything in my post that said I struggled with solo bosses because of the command spell? I actually think command is BETTER in situations with more enemies, because that's where it really shines. Turn 1: cast your big concentration spell Turn 2: cast command to control even those who...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Blogofholding has done a pretty good job at mathing it out.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Sure thing. I trust Blogofholding's math when it comes to this. He did a pretty in-depth look at the monster math, and when I use his table of stats per CR, I don't see meaningful differences between legendary and nonlegendary monsters except gaining Legendary Resistance and 25% damage.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

You know what's funny about 2024 D&D? They used to make Legendary Resistance "cost" HP when doing calculations on the monster's CR. Now they are pretty much free. The difference between a normal and legendary monster is pretty much that a legendary monster has Legendary Resistances and deals 25%...

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

Ok, I get what you are going for, but that just means you made a monster nearly immune. I am considering altering the root of the cause.

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

That sounds really unfun. I have been thinking about certain powerful monsters auto-succeeding on spells that take away actions until they are bloodied. It's just odd that command doesn't even confer the charmed condition. That would buff and nerf it in a good way too.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I see this said often "buckets of hp". Were monsters deal in 1 turn in older editions? Because in my experience, even monsters with "buckets of hp" die in 3 rounds of combat. Less, usually. PC's also deal buckets of damage (which is fun). Is this an actual problem in 5e?

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

Hey folks, I want to know: have you noticed the command spell seeing a lot more use at your table? What do you think about it? The command spell underwent some changes in the recent revised rules of 5e Command (2014) Command (2024) The biggest change is the removal of certain limitations. The...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

My players have used Tiny Hut as a safe haven during travel and within dungeons. We have had fights where the party was still inside the Tiny Hut. I dislike the way it plays out, and would rather see the hut lose its forcefield capability.

D&D General 5e (2014 and 2024) pacing Issues and how to fix them (+Thread)

Yeah I get that. It's hard to implement a rule that feels bad to the players. I personally prefer house rules to be as simple as possible. More then a sentence to explain the rule and it has to be REALLY important to me. This was closest to my goal. I think your design should work, but it does...

D&D General 5e (2014 and 2024) pacing Issues and how to fix them (+Thread)

Interesting mechanics! I do fear that it will power up the PC's, which is against my personal goal when dealing with this issue. I have actually tried a similar thing. I gave the PC's a 1.1x XP modifier and inspiration after 2 encounters, an action point and 1.25x XP after 4, and some more...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I am not so sure. People who play 5e have lots of fun with it. It's already proven to be an amazing edition of D&D. It's harder to sell people on the game again. 5e reached FAR beyond any TTRPG's reach. People who are playing D&D 5e now might not be as up to date with everything. And if they...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

I had a great time last sunday on the second session of my Return of the Red King campaign. Our heroes had just escaped a dungeon from being sacrificed to Tiamat, and now had to find civilization. They were low on any sort of supplies, but had to move on. The first random encounter they got...

    WotC D&D Universes Beyond

D&D isn't like MtG. We control what we use at our own table, which is why we can choose to mix and match with 5e products from other publishers. WotC can't cram Spongebob into your game. I don't buy everything WotC makes anyway, so this won't change much for me.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I’m working my way back through this thread, I hope you don’t mind. In my latest campaign, I have added a new rule, as discussed in session 0. “Long Rest. You cannot get the benefits of a long rest outside of a safe haven. Taking a long rest outside a safe haven only lets you regain all your...

Dungeons & Dragons to Release Lorwyn: First Light, a New Digital Expansion Based on Magic: The Gathering World

As someone who has been hoping for a WotC-produced feywild setting book, this is a huge disappointment. I don’t use D&DBeyond for character creation or to share with my players. This is too little and not in a way I can use. I was actually looking forward to a Lorwyn setting book like Theros...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

So I have played a TON of D&D 2024. Mostly as a DM, though I would say 1/5th was as a player in a tier 3 game where we transitioned. Pros: Better class balance. Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, Rogues and even rangers saw updates bringing them in line with modern design sensibilities. Better...

    D&D 5E (2024) How can I do a Charisma-Investigation (or a Strength/Dexterity-Investigation if I can't use Charisma) to find a secret door?

You're asking us to find a way to convince your DM to use CHA to find secret doors? Maybe just accept you have a party of dum-dums and roll with it?
