AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

I don't make the "fourth" adjustment. Xp values are what they are, regardless how easy or difficult the battle might be. I just let the J-curve of advancement tables take care of characters gaining xp by mowing down mooks - they'll run out of mooks to kill long before they advance very far. :)...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

...and confused? For so long it's not true?

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

I think I see part of why those numbers come out low. Were I doing it the starting point would be: 6+1 HD monster +1 EAXPB (potential damage per round) +1 SAXPB (free action) [+1 SAXPB (if proficient in any missile weapon)] 5+1 HD monster +1 HD (second class) +1 EAXPB (spell use) +1 SAXPB (the...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

And I find all those numbers come out way too low in comparison to the degree of threat those opponents present to the PCs. Nah, not here. Odds are they'd blow some of it up during the combat by lightning bolting the other party, then sell off some of the rest. Even without that I'm fine with...

Then invent that condition and give it a name other than 'stun' which can then continue to mean what it already does: that you're stunned, standing there defenseless and incapable of attack or (coherent) movement.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

This actually came up in our game a year or two back: the party had to very carefully disassemble a valuable tapestry in order to access the piece of cloth hidden within it, and then reassemble it afterwards. And so we all rolled d10 to see, on a 1-10 scale, how good we were at sewing and-or...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

Oh, sure. What's different, perhaps, between my view and that of the general community is that I'm usually fine with so-called disruptive play as long as it stays in character, because if it's what the character would do then it's what the character should be doing. If-when it comes out of...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

They should be. Part of the point of playing is to be able to laugh at the crazy things the characters do, even if-when it's to each other. :)

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

I don't have an "intended outcome" and simply don't look at it that way. IME most party-vs-party combats are when the two parties are competing for the same resources; in other words the opposing party either is the BBEG or is just another obstacle. Yeah, while I see where you're going here...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

Someone gets it! Someone finally gets it!!! What happens in character stays in character. Separation of self and character is the key element here; that you and Bob at the table can laugh about his character's thieving and resulting expulsion from the party even while in the game your...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

A lot of this might come down to the (expected or perceived) lethality of the campaign, and thus playing in survival-first mode. As for "when is it your turn?" the answer is "Whenever you want it to be". Just because someone else rolls up a back-line wizard is no reason for you not to roll one...

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

Yes, and if that's what the other characters would have done then IMO they should bloody well have done it long since. Just because a character is someone's PC doesn't and shouldn't make it immune to such things.

D&D General What are your reasons for doing something because "It's what my character would do"?

For me, the answer is in the question: I have my character do what it would do because it's what the character would do. And yes, that reasoning is about as circular as it gets. :) Why? Because if I'm playing a character true to itself - which, IMO, should always be priority number one - then...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Anything at and over 3rd Cleric would be major spell use for me: Silence and Hold Person can change an entire combat; and at 5th level they get Prayer which is also huge (+1 might not seem like much but when your whole side gets it the effects add up fast!).

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

For NPCs like that I always convert them to having levels of Fighter, therefore the Lieutenants here would be 4th-level Fighters. In other words, I follow the 3e line of thinking - only I got there about 15 years before 3e came out. :) The leader is an 8th level Cleric, the guards are 6th...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Might be as simple as his gaining access to a proper word processor by 1978 as opposed to his manual typewriter. I suspect the page-85 table is a late add-on to allow DMs a means of working out xp values for their homebrew monsters, without regard for what Appendix E has to say. Or, flip side...

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

So in short, if a paralysis-hold-stun-etc. effect renders* the victim completely unable to fight or defend it's an EAXPB but if it merely renders the victim less able to fight or defend it's an SAXPB. Duration irrelevant. Seems a simple enough rule of thumb from here. :) * - or potentially...

    D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

Even when playing online, a paper character sheet is still the way to go IMO. If nothing else, you get to decide the format it's in and what goes where etc., and that alone makes things light-years easier to find than using someone else's format and layout.

Ah, of course. I saw "23-Aug" and assumed it meant August the 23rd, and so on. Silly me. :)
