D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I'm fine with players suggesting houserules as long as I retain veto rights. I don't want to say 'incapable' as that's a bit too absolute, but IME such discussions often ended up as unresolved arguments where the DM had to make the final call anyway. We tend to be a somewhat stubborn bunch. :)...

Indeed, but there's still the basic instinct to not lose. Loss conditions include character death, level drain, petrification, item or gear destruction, stat loss, and so forth. Which means, were I to take a (hypothetical) proposal to the players that would result in more item and gear...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

Your #1 is sound but the other 9 largely leave me somewhere between lukewarm and ice cold. Design for 10 levels but leave it open-ended, with a great big caveat that going beyond 10th means you're on your own as the system may or may not continue to function properly, with the likelihood of...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

U Can't Touch This (reworded) is the theme song of one of my wife's heavy Fighters, whose AC is somewhere in the -8 or -9 range.

I'd make the same ruling. Same reason you can't wear two suits of magic armour and have them both function.

I also remember there being a cap at -10 by RAW. I've always ignored it, but then anything better is very rare anyway. The best AC I've ever seen on a PC was, I think, -12 (-10 plus Boots of Speed in the right situation).

What level characters was this adventure intended for?

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I've seen good-Dex warrior types often enough to know they're a thing. But if decent Dex doesn't make sense, by RAW 1e you can substitute a Ring of Protection +2 for the Dex and you're right back to -7; and Rings +2 were fairly common.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

A non-warrior getting to -7 is unusual. For warrior types, though, -7 is very reachable: plate +3, shield* +3, 16 Dex - boom, there's -7 for ya. * - we beat the designers to the punch by years by making shields give two points of AC bonus rather than one. If the setting supports (i.e. if the...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

It was probably here: a poster named Quasqueton ran those numbers for a bunch of TSR modules. Some of those threads might be in the "archives" section, I'm not sure.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I think that's true of many of the TSR-era modules: the assumption that the PCs will only find a percentage of the available treasure. My experiences with Bone Hill bear that out: there's loads of treasure in there but what's been brought out each time was highly variable. (in all the times...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

This is an interesting idea, if one has the right group of players. It would probably help if all those players had at least enough DMing experience to know what a vaguely-level-appropriate encounter looks like (doesn't have to be bang-on right but when someone turns in a Lich encounter for a...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Of my current group of four, two are forever-players (I'm married to one of them!) and two are or have been DMs. I've seen more of a mix. Most notably, I've seen a couple of people who were poor-to-awful players go on to become good-to-very-good DMs. And if required, I'm fully capable of and...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

More or less, yes, assuming a game with any degree of risk or danger to its characters (i.e. loss conditions). The players and GM are working to different agendae beneath the overlying agenda of "keep the game going and keep the game fun". The GM's main sub-agenda is the same as the...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

In an old campaign of mine, a couple of Cavaliers became long-term staples in the party. Since then, however, Cavaliers have often been one-hit wonders, dying at the first or second opportunity. They do, however, make great NPCs in the right culture.

Must have been a cloak because I don't think shields and bracers work together.

I've run and played Bone Hill several times and don't remember there being any Gauntlets of Ogre Power in there. Did those come from somewhere else?

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

By themselves, bracers (which cap out at AC 2) and ring of protection (which caps out at +5) can only get you to AC -3. To get to AC -7 requires some additional help, most likely Dex 18+. I've seen it done once, by an Illusionist in an old campaign of mine using just this setup, and she still...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

My take: it's better to trust that the players will try to abuse things at some point, even if unintentionally. That way you're ready and prepared to deal with it if-when it happens, and if it doesn't happen then all is well and nothing is lost.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I think the answer to the thread title's question's has now emerged: Q: Why do people like alignment? A: So they can assign Neutral Evil as the default alignment of all DMs.
