Level Up (A5E) Questions From Someone Who Was Looking At A5E Right Before The WOTC/OGL Nonsense

Midnight was originally a 3.x setting from Fantasy Flight games, imagined as if Sauron had won the war of the ring, subjugated the world, and the heroes are the only resistance left. It was epic, dark, fun, and had a huge amount of sourcebooks to go with the original game. I don't know what...

D&D 5E (2014) So this is how D&D 5e dies, a beautiful start only to die in disgrace because of mismanagement. RIP 5e

I really don't think 5e is dead, it will remain permanently. And I really don't even think 5.5e (or 6e, or One, whatever the hell it is) will die either. It is coming and people will play it. Will as MANY people play it as 5e? I don't think so. But the movie will do good, maybe even...

    D&D 5E (2014) Will you continue to give WotC D&D your $$$

I haven't been a real customer of WotC in a long time. I didn't even buy Tasha's or Xanathar. I don't use or subscribe to DnDB (although the character builder is excellent) and the last adventure I bought was CoS for Roll20 three years ago. If they come out with a particularly amazing...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ACTUALLY use 3rd Party Books?

The LU MM is just FUN to read! I don't think I have enjoyed reading a monster manual that much in many, many years. I hope any new 3PP manual moving forward uses a similar format. It adds in encounter size, treasure, combat strategy, morale parameters and more, plus really interesting lore.

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

Yeah, it does seem a bit like gaslighting. I think what bothers me more than anything else (so far) is the leak saying that WotC + Hasbro higher ups regarding the community as obstacles to their money. Now, I am not a DDB subscriber and I haven't bought any WotC books in three years, but that...

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

If we still remember how THAC0 works, there's no way in hell we're forgetting about this.

    Can WotC be forgiven?

Exactly. Those "Drafts" weren't drafts: they were sent out with NDAs and contracts to sign. You don't send out an official document as a "draft" with a contract attached.

    Can WotC be forgiven?

Lol! They did didn't they? DDB is just a fancy online character sheet.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ACTUALLY use 3rd Party Books?

I have used 3rd party stuff from Kobold Press extensively. I have most of the pdfs and a lot of the material for Roll20, so absolutely yes. They are also my first choice for the Black Flag system, although I am sure that is a long way out from actually being published.

OGL-Gate & Mainstream Media: The Guardian Weighs In

I can't imagine what is going through the heads of Hasbro corporate right now. They want to save face AND save money and put this debacle behind them, but are probably second guessing every decision they make at this point because it seems to be the wrong ones.

D&D General Are You Seriously Planning to Stop Playing and/or Running D&D Over The Recent OGL Developments?

No, I will continue playing. I really want to dip into Spelljammer for a while and already have it prepped in Roll20. Down the road when Kobold or some other company releases their new game I will reevaluate. I have been kinda bored with 5e for a while and wanted something new, but also didn't...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

That was my main concern; you get 5-6 publishers putting out 5-6 different fantasy games, there's no way the public can keep up. In an ideal world they could co-create a core game and all SHARE supplementing it, but I don't know if such a thing is even possible. It would be unprecedented.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

For me, I think what will come from this is the actual "6e" I wanted, not the slightly 5.5 updated version D&D that WotC planned, but it will come from one (or more) of the other extremely talented developers. EDIT: And I would be perfectly happy is a core PHB focused on levels 1-10 and left...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Whoa. Now that would be something special. EDIT: And that is the kind of modular game D&D SHOULD be, or rather, whatever version of D&D springs from this new era. If you want an Ars Magica magic system, there is a mod you can plug in.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

yeah, I tried PF2, it is definitely not for me. I am curious about what Kobold comes out with and some of the other big hitters.

D&D 5E (2014) Casual player responses to DMs planning to avoid WotC 5e/1DnD rules

I have two groups, one is casual (Strahd), the other is far more advanced (Margreve) and the latter we have discussed internally the OGL 1.1 and its implications. I had already for a long while been planning to incorporate Level Up material into my next campaign, whenever that might be...

Brian Lewis, original legal drafter of the OGL, speaks out

Yeah, if Paizo and Kobold and another big one worked together, that would be amazing.

D&D General Are you jumping ship? What will you be switching to?

You can't go wrong with Masks. Which version are you using? They came out with a truly massive, massive expansion version of Masks a few years ago. If interested, you can read the recap on my blog here: https://jmhauser.com/roleplaying-games/the-complete-masks-of-nyarlathotep/ This is the...

OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

I have been running Tales from the Old Margreve for 3 years now, with healthy doses of other KP products and my own ideas, so the original module has been bastardized into something unrecognizable, but it is still mostly Kobold ideas and themes. I think their material is even better than WotC...
