What is the difference between discussing characters with each other with the DM present before session zero and creating those exact same characters in session zero?

Except, beforehand, we did exactly this. We talked about our concepts (and the DM was present), and discussed which roles our characters would take.

Nothing I did couldn't have been undone. It wouldn't have slowed anything down, nor would it have disrupted anything.

Edit: In light of @Hussar's more measured post, I will be editing this to also be more measured. As he mentioned in his post, he and I both remember things differently. Nothing during the creation process interfered with his little game, which was a way for us to tie our characters together...

Nope, standard array. He was there when we discussed concepts, races, and available classes. Same thing we've done every time we've started a new campaign. We asked him what wasn't allowed, and that was it.
