    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Oh yes. I buy the PDFs of DM's screens sometimes and print the backsides of them and put them in a plastic slip so that they're sitting in front of me. I just can't stand the actual screens.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

My complaint about some of the classes (like Rogue) would be that they're boring combatants given how much time combat tends to take.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I tend to feel the benefits of hiding information from the players such as DCs and making secret rolls are vastly overstated, while the benefits of having everything clear and allowing the players to make informed decisions to be underestimated. I personally really wish game companies would...

D&D General What class is Gandalf?

Monk. Explains why he's so sprightly.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I don't really get how it could ever be considered "good".

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

It's just not the right time for a D&D alternative to break big right now. D&D right now is more than a game system - it's a fanbase. People want to be playing D&D because it's the system that Critical Role plays, it's the system that other streamers play, it's the system everyone is posting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Honestly, I find the whole three pillars thing is just frustrating. I simply don't feel that any kind of satisfactory bar was met to ever take the idea of three pillars at all seriously. It feels like something almost entirely willed into existence on the basis that people like the sound of it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I tend to feel in these discussions that they seem to break down into people who ask the question "Is D&D the best tool for the job for the game I'm running" and those that seem to feel that it alway is.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Honestly, one of the most frustrating things about being a player in D&D is skills. Or perhaps more specifically the fact that DM's in general (and it seems adventure writers) don't really understand that skills don't work the way they seem to believe they do. They mistake high level of skill...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Obviously true but also I would have thought, obviously irrelevant? Honestly, I think a step back is needed. I don't know what's going through your head if that's a reply. My point was that combat is frequently the climactic event. The fact that non-combat events lead to violent climaxes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I didn't say it never happenned. But are your non-combat climactic scenes 1. As regular as combat ones? 2. Of a kind in the way that combat is? Eg "Courtroom drama" is a specific kind of scene not a general kind of non-combat scene, therefore if you're doing it week in and week out you'd need...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

If D&D was instead Law and Order the Rpg you would absoultely need there to be mechanics to deal with a courtroom climax scene. It would just be too hard on the GM to run a game week in, week out without it, they'd have to do all the work of prepping details and pacing the climax themselves...

D&D 5E (2014) What makes boss fights memorable?

It also helps if it's not the first time the PCs have faced the boss. Think about movies, often then final fight is a rematch of an earlier fight which the heroes either lost or was inconclusive for some some reason. This can be a challenge because players will often go to ridiculous lengths...

D&D 5E (2014) What makes boss fights memorable?

Well that definitely works! But even just their character dying may be enough.

Wheel of Time Discussion - Spoilers(with book spoilers)

I don't know. You might also give someone the advice that "even if you've read the books, don't necessarily dismiss the show".

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

If you're not doing combat then there's whole classes that don't get to use any of their cool stuff. If you're party's all rogues or wizards that's probably fine, but if you have Fighter's and Barbarians and the players don't want to get into fights, then why exactly did they choose to play...

D&D General What if Critical Role had stuck with Pathfinder? Or 4E?

Both Pathfinder and 4e are probably too complex too really take off in streaming. Now if they had moved to 13th Age, a simpler game that is better suited to the kinds of games they play than 5e...? Maybe it would still have taken off, but the reality is that consumers are brand obsessed and we...

D&D General Preparing Towns in a Sandbox

What meaningful decision points will there be for the PCs in each town? What differentiates the town from being a series of DM descriptions? - in which case you probably need about a paragraph's worth of notes. The trouble with travelling through places is that you need to decide how to break...

D&D General Chris just said why I hate wizard/fighter dynamic

If people want to continue this derailment about why D&D is the most popular game could someone just start a new thread?
