D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Um.... I think you missed part of the conversation. I was talking about how my group way back in 1E days rolled up PCs using '3d6 in order' just as an experiment to see what we'd come up with. We didn't use them, it was just a test to see what would happen.

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I never owned/read those two, but I have the Holmes rulebook... and it seems to be written very clearly and understandable. But, of course, it only goes to level 3...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

well, the experiment was under 1E rules, so all those minimums applied. I suppose it was good that it was just an experiment and not some DM who insisted on '3d6 in order'.....

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I don't remember any DM ever in any of the groups I was around going that extreme either. The most common chargen method I saw was 'roll 3d6 6 times, rearrange to suit.' Of course, lots of players wanted to play a particular class, and rather than cheat, it was generally 'roll up lotsa PCs'...

another common house rule was 'max hp at first level'. One reason I liked playing rangers in 1E....

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

yeah, this thread is devolving into another edition bashing one.... I always felt lucky that I got into D&D when I was 20.... early enough that I was in there when it was all pretty new (1E days), but old enough to be out of the 'awkward child/teen' era. As for answering the question of 'how...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I don't remember out and out cheating, but I remember a lot of 'rolling up lotsa PCs.' One really common thing was not rolling '3d6 in order', but 'rolling 3d6 6 times, and rearrange them as you please.' Even back in those olden days, you had players who liked particular classes, and letting...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I got into D&D during the 1E era, and enjoyed it immensely, but... yeah, this. 1E was the third iteration of the game, and it wasn't very coherent. My initial and biggest disappointment with 2E was that it wasn't a 'cleaned up and coherent' version of 1E. But you always gotta remember that 1E...

D&D General Tell us about yourself

I grew up in a tiny MT town, and didn't discover D&D until I went to college in a bigger (but still rather small) town. All of my gaming years were in 1E and 2E years, and pretty much ended around 1990. My previous job kept me moving around a lot, so I found it impossible to get back into...

    AD&D 1E Non-Japanese Elements of 1e Oriental Adventures

yeah, I was always pretty sure the driving force behind OA was "you know, samurai and ninjas are pretty neat... let's make rules for them!"

D&D General Quaint and curious monsters of forgotten core

did the doombat from the 1E FF ever appear anywhere after that? I always liked this monstrous powerful bat that could bite, whip you with it's tail, and emit a godawful sonic shriek. Plus, it was big enough to be ridden. I put doombats in quite a few places in my campaign worlds....

D&D General What version of the Basic D&D/BECMI starter set did you first own?

yeah, that was my first one too, got it in 1980. The chits were so annoying that (literally) the next day, I went out and bought a set of dice, and consigned the chits to the trash can. The box eventually disintegrated, the B2 module ended up disappearing, but I still have the rulebook...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

wouldn't the walls also be useful on a day to day basis for things like security (the guards see who is entering) and taxes (merchant caravans, etc.)? Restricting access to several gates seems like it would be a lot easier to keep track of such things. Again, it wouldn't help with powerful...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

yeah, this. Sure, the walls won't help much when you get that 'once in 500 years' dragon attack. But they work fine for those 'every other year massive hordes of orcs/whatever' attacks...

D&D General D&D made the 2022 Doorway to Demonic Possession list!

my first thoughts on reading that was something along the lines of spying on people with cameras or something. Which isn't nice, but hardly a biggie on the path to demonic possession...

D&D General First official D&D game product you owned?

ironically, with the march of modern technology, you could do that now. All of the loose leaf MC books are available from DTRPG (I think), and if you really wanted to, you could download them all, print them all out to one monster per page (some would be two sided, most wouldn't, depending on...
