D&D in the 80s, Fads, and the Satanic Panic

Kids, no. I wasn't a kid when I started playing though, and I couldn't help but notice that TSR had some management issues... some things just couldn't be hidden.... the mass layoffs at different times, the failure of some business ventures (acquiring SPI's stuff, for ex.), etc.

Basic D&D Was Selling 600,000+/Year At One Point

as much as I despised the Satanic Panic people, I always hesitated to denounce this particular person.... losing a child has to be the worst thing in the world....

D&D in the 80s, Fads, and the Satanic Panic

having started with rpgs in 1980, I saw the Satanic Panic thing as something.... that happened way over there. In spite of the fact that I grew up in a tiny MT town surrounded by some rather religious conservative types, the whole anti-D&D thing was never really a thing there. People generally...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Why We Need Mo' Oerth by 2024

Greyhawk and some Dungeon Adventures ones that weren't specifically set there, but had a nautical theme and could fit well into that book. Which kinda brings up the idea if they could do something similar with other adventures set there. There's the whole GDQ line, the Slavers line, the...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Why We Need Mo' Oerth by 2024

I seem to be alone in this, but my favorite in the series was Sea of Death... mainly because I was always intensely interested in that lost city that was the capital of the Suel Empire...

TSR Am I The Only One Buying Up the DMs Guild Reprints?

one problem... IIRC, for DTRPG to do those great scans, they have to essentially destroy an original copy to get them (I think one of their people said that on another website I hang out on). Destroying one of those early copies seems a bit... like heresy. :P

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Why We Need Mo' Oerth by 2024

I suppose WOTC could do one big book with pre and post Wars info. The Post Wars WoG, though, has a lot more changes than just the SB being outed. A couple of nations just disappear, the Flan are damn near exterminated, Hepmonaland is revealed as an SB backwater place instead of the mysterious...

The difference between Ad&d 1st and 2nd edition?

yep, just that. About the only exceptions I can remember (it's been a few... decades) were surprise (another complicated 1E thing) and sometimes spells that had long casting times. In the events of ties, we'd have everyone in melee strike at once and spells would be judged on casting times...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Why We Need Mo' Oerth by 2024

while the WoG is my favorite campaign, there's a rather large question to be answered before it can be updated for 5E: Pre or Post Wars. The two settings have some big differences.... nations and people wiped out, etc. One of the biggest ones is the role of the Scarlet Brotherhood... Pre Wars...

The difference between Ad&d 1st and 2nd edition?

from what I remember back in 1E days, most of the groups I was in reduced all that to 'one player rolls a D6, DM rolls a D6, winner gets initiative for their side.' The only thing that affected it was surprise....

The difference between Ad&d 1st and 2nd edition?

yeah, that was pretty obvious to those of us playing the game back then. I think my biggest disappointment about 2E was that it wasn't a straight 'clean up' of 1E... I was really annoyed that TSR was so spooked by the BADD crowd that they took the fiends out of the game (at first) and some of...

TSR Am I The Only One Buying Up the DMs Guild Reprints?

no, you're not the only one. By my count, I have 22 of the ones on your list, a few others that aren't on the list, and PDFs of several more. I'm so very weak....

D&D General Your first D&D experiences?

I bought the 1E books before finding a group, managed to get into one that was running a one shot with starting PCs, played some kind of half elf fighter/mage. The main thing I remember about that first adventure was getting stuck alone someplace with a zombie and killing it with a couple of...

D&D General Dungeon Magazine's Top 30 Adventures: Do they hold up?

I'd have to agree with the people throughout this thread who are noting the nostalgia value of most of the list. The ultimate example is B2... this one was a very early module and reflected the 'it's all new and we're not really sure what we're doing' attitude at the time. When the game was...

AD&D 1E Magic items in AD&D, making them and getting them.

ever play any of the early 1E modules? They were stuffed to the gills with treasure, both magical and mundane. This carried over into the first adventures in Dungeon Adventures too. Yeah, I think that rule got ignored a lot. Otherwise, our parties (especially after going through those early...

The difference between Ad&d 1st and 2nd edition?

I wasn't a child, but... yeah, this seems to have been a common experience. 1E was really not well organized or explained. That said, it was something new and the basic idea was a real attention grabber that people loved...

D&D General Does you campaign setting match where you live?

I've lived most of my life in MT, ID, and WY... always thought the Barrens in Greyhawk were a good match, although I never ran a whole campaign there....

D&D General Why did you pick your campaign setting?

Greyhawk at first, because that's all there was for a while. I ran a campaign in the FR during my short time in 2E days....
