No one but me has posted the rules for my Fantasy Hack of MHRP. The specialities were invented by me, based on an integration of the MHRP specialties and the 4e D&D skill list, plus my own sense of D&D-esque fantasy flavour. Gee, if only I'd posted this before: Actually., I think this is the...

No. I told you what the word "Cunning" means. That's all. The word cunning includes shrewdness, keen insight, craftiness etc. And I also told you what Cunning Expert pertains to: "In a game that is deliberately playing on classic D&D tropes, Cunning includes the thief's traditional ability to...

I don't claim that they are the same. But neither is an event that occurs in the fiction. They are things that happen at the table, in order to generate fiction. But everyone knows that the PC is going to the temple to find a cleric! That's the whole point of the example. If the character is...

I thought that in D&D I could use a skill when it makes sense in a situation. Anything else would be pretty odd, wouldn't it? This suggests that you're not familiar with how naming things works. As I alluded to upthread, the magic-user can't use all magic. The spell "Guidance" doesn't actually...

So, upthread I asked this: And so you really are telling me that I'm wrong about the rules of my own fantasy hack of MHRP! Don't you think that might be overreaching a little bit? Do you think this post, from me, is relevant to understanding how a game that you only know about from me telling...

Everyone knows that thieves were god PCs in classic D&D! I mean, does it get any more overpowered than a 17th level thief having a better than 100% chance to pick pockets?

Also, my ostensible inability to draw the logical connection that the character is making the runes mean <this> rather than <that>.

If the GM tells the player they are authoring, the player then knows that their action declaration prompted the GM to author something. I don't see how that is structurally different from the action declaration leading to a dice roll that then prompts everyone to agree that something has been...

My objection to "quantum" is that it is never applied to the myriad "quantum" things that those who deploy it as rhetorical device include in their own play - quantum clerics, quantum farriers, quantum sharp rocks, quantum crumbling rocks, quantum etc. I don't think that any of the posters who...

Sure. That's why I always play magic-users in classic D&D, too, because there's no magic that they can't use! (It's all in the name, after all.) Alternatively: as I already posted, the Cunning specialty is intended to capture a good chunk of classic thief abilities. You are the one who is...

You posted "You surely not saying that the players author the entire world by asking the GM to run a game for them?" And my point is that no, @clearstream is not saying that.

And from an in-fiction perspective the runes say whatever it is that they say. The two cases are thus identical. (Which is unsurprising - that will be true for all non-absurd RPGs, and the only absurd RPGs I know off the top of my head are Toon, and Over the Edge though the latter is more subtle...

I don't understand your obsession with exit signs, which to the best of my knowledge are a modern invention. There are very many ways that writing can reveal information about a way out. I've posted some examples in this thread. So have @clearstream and @Gimby. Gimby and I both referenced some...

The only meaning of those terms that I'm familiar with is [URL='http://www.indie-rpgs.com/articles/4/this one[/url]: In Actor stance, a person determines a character's decisions and actions using only knowledge and perceptions that the character would have. In Author stance, a person determines...

I make it up! It's not hard. The players aren't drawing a map. If they want their PCs to make a map, they could do that by using a Specialty to create an appropriate Resource, which would then contribute a die to the dice pool for appropriate actions.

I think that central to the RPG, in its most paradigmatic form, is two things: *Fiction matters to resolution; *Most of the participants (that is, the players) engage with the fiction from the position/perspective of one particular person within the fiction (their player character). The first...

So, you say that you play PbtA games. The only one I remember you actually mentioning is Monster of the Week, which as best I understand is a pretty traditional game in its play structure, but that uses some AW-esque mechanics. So I don't know if you use the AW technique of "asking questions...
