    What was your 2nd RPG?

Technically, my first ever session was a dude's place that my school friend was playing every week. They had a 2E campaign going for like two years. I played one session and didn't really enjoy it. So 2E would be my first TTRPG ever. The following year my math teacher in high school organized...

GMs: What is your prep to play ratio?

My actual functional prep I try to keep at 30 min for a session. But I generally have a at least a dozen or two hours of prep ahead of a campaign. And I tend to do so loose prep here and there when I go to coffee shops or have some free time. Just jotting down ideas.

What's Your Bucket List Campaign to Play?

Happy for you! I'm still waiting for that email more than a year after the planned date. I can't wait. Really hope it comes before the holidays!

OSR Games that really use combat as a fail state?

The notion of combat being a fail state in OSR is something that gets greatly exaggerated though. Combat is not a fail state, it's just that it can easily lead to a fail state (dying). Combat is dangerous. The odds are more in your favour if you find another way to solve your problem, or to...

What's Your Bucket List Campaign to Play?

I've got a couple. There's definitely a match between what's on my shelves and what I want to have: A thorough hexcrawl campaign through Dolmenwood Go through the six-book campaign of Symbaroum Do a long historical campaign. Something medieval/Viking-esque. I did plenty, but life has kept them...

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

I'd be really curious to know more about your solo journey. These are quite different games mechanically. I've only dipped my toe in soloing. Could be in another thread on in PM.

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

I have about three dozen systems in my bookshelf that I've read and die to play but didn't have the chance to play yet. It's definitely not only D&D!

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

Ever? Maybe around ten. Right now? Only one. Although my group might have imploded because of layoffs.

You'd think so. But language and language are not synonyms either. Common mistake.

The Pioneer RPG Kickstarter is Now Live!

Every day is a bad time for my annual RPG budget. Oof, I was interested but yeah, that is the priciest PDF I've ever seen. I can get whole boxsets for that price!

    Matt Colville's Community

I think the difference is that the pineapple thread is obviously offtopic. He focuses on communities built around a specific thing (in most cases a product). If we take his own product as example, lots of people get excited for Draw Steel. They get together and they start talking about it...

    Matt Colville's Community

To those that are a bit put off by the length, I'd say that the first half is the most relevant to the current discussion about topics, roughly 30 minutes of it if it helps. Once he starts talking about Price, it swerves into a slightly different lane (not that it's not interesting, the price of...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Burning Wheel has rules for fighting. But I've found out of all the games I've played, it can satisfyingly go on the longest without any combat and still be captivating. Currently running a 11th century anglo-saxon/viking campaign and we have yet to have a fight. And if you want to stretch...

    Matt Colville's Community

Matt makes this distinction in the full fledged video. I'm paraphrasing, but coming and saying "I'm unhappy with this aspect of 5E, it doesn't work for me. Am I misunderstanding it? What could I do if I want to achieve X?" is technically being critical of the game, but not out of dislike of the...

    Matt Colville's Community

So, Matt Colville released a video about community building recently. I like Matt, he's a smart guy and I almost always learn something from his videos, or they're just generally interesting. So his latest video was definitely on my radar. Then, I heard/read it being praised by three...

OSR Old School Essentials 2026 update

The fact that they'll offer a free PDF with some of the content there eases me. I'm especially interested in the examples of play.

OSR Old School Essentials 2026 update

Edit: Of course, only after posting, on second viewing do I notice that there's a thread already existing. Old-School Essentials — 2026 and Beyond So, as I'm still eargerly waiting for an email saying that my big box of Dolmenwood is on its way, I received an email this weekend. Necrotic Gnome...

D&D 5E (2024) How to make ranged attack more hazardous for the user.

Some rulesets allow you to have a bonus if you take an action or move action to aim instead of moving. I've added a house rule a few times where if you moved, you had either a malus or disadvantage on your ranged attacks. You either took the time to aim and shoot, or you skipped around and did...

    I made a terrible life decision…

I did the same mistake earlier this year. Great motivation to organize all of it. Put it all on the floor, motivation dissipates. That's a high CR trap right there.

D&D General Settings of Hope vs Settings of Despair

I almost always do dark settings. Whether it's a story of hope or despair depends on my players and their characters. I don't think the setting is inherently hopeful or in despair.
