Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition Is Coming in 2026

Man, people were a bit shocked at the Age of Sigmar and the newer Fantasy RPG (The Old World?) being announced. And now this. They're releasing so much material.

    Dragonbane general thread [+]

We know they're not mutually exclusive. We just like a different tone, we have different sensibilities. I don't think whimsy and duck characters are childish. I just like darker, political, grounded campaigns. And I'm not complaining, I didn't buy Dragonbane because I expected monsters and...

    Dragonbane general thread [+]

Now I might be interested! Trudvang always seemed like an interesting setting I wanted to read about. Dragonbane also seemed interesting but the quoted elements pushed it into a tone that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'll wait and see for the content of the books, but if there's a few...

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fabula Ultima, VOIDSEA, Vast Grimm, and more

For anyone curious, here's the original trademark by Talsorian. https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=73817122&caseSearchType=US_APPLICATION&caseType=DEFAULT&searchType=statusSearch And here's the one filed by CD Projekt thereafter...

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fabula Ultima, VOIDSEA, Vast Grimm, and more

The thing is, if I wanted to use the word Cyberpunk in the title of one of my games, I would have felt entirely comfortable doing so. I doubt it would really hold up. But getting sued by an individual designer or a billion-dollar video game company is not the same battle.

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fabula Ultima, VOIDSEA, Vast Grimm, and more

The trademark for traditional games also exists, Pondsmith passed it to CD Projekt if I recall.

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

My default is very much to worldbuild and prepare a ton of stuff. But I'm working very hard to be more ad lib. Whenever I inject an healthy dose of improvisation and keep the prep to tools, lists and tables the quality of my games improve. I never prepare plots, or stories, or arcs; I think...

I think it is time for a break.

Breaks are great. Mine are short. But when I feel exhausted I step away and every time there's an idea that energizes me and pulls me back in naturally. No point in forcing yourself to stick around artificially.

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fabula Ultima, VOIDSEA, Vast Grimm, and more

I do agree that it's really dumb. It's literally the name of a genre. I know because I've been working on a video game project and I thought about having something like A Cyberpunk Story in the name and I checked trademarks and there it is.

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fabula Ultima, VOIDSEA, Vast Grimm, and more

I know that CD Projekt trademarked "Cyberpunk" for both video games and traditional games, at least in the US. I hope it won't cause issue with that campaign.

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I've watched the first two seasons of Critical Role, I know what an actual play is. There's been good and bad episodes. I can definitely enjoy it in the right conditions. I definitely meant descriptions, naming things we don't know what they are, just sharing lore when there's something more...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I sat down yesterday and watched about an hour. That's alot of exposition. I had to put it down, I didn't have the focus for it. Maybe this weekend.

    Sequel game systems?

It depends on what you mean to "exist alongside it". If you mean still being available to buy or have the associated supporting resources still being available, there's a ton. D&D is an example of it. If you mean still being supported, promoted, having products released, etc. There's some...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

That's a really cool start point. I love how they're having fun and trying new things. It definitely is not just some friends playing D&D, it has become a show and what doesn't work at a regular table might work for a business making entertainment. I bounced off hard from Campaign 3 but I'll...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Modern is a definition that has to evolve. What we think of modern now is different than what we thought as modern. I know that, personally, there's a few elements that seem vestigial when I spot them. For example, if I see a matrix table in a game, I take for granted it was written on a...

Star Wars WEG D6 - The Force Point - "Is it a good thing?"

I love a lot of what he's trying to achieve, I generally dislike how he achieves it. Yeah, that's a foundational design decision. If you want odds stacked against the players, you have to give them some mechanical ways to bring the odds back. If you stack the odds in their favor, you have less...

Hasbro Opens New Wizards of the Coast Video Game Studio in Montreal to Support D&D Franchise

The workers do not need to speak French. A sizeable portion of my colleagues moved here from the US or the rest or Canada and do not speak a word of french. At least a third of my interactions with industry peers is entirely in English. They might need to learn French if they want to immigrate...

Star Wars WEG D6 - The Force Point - "Is it a good thing?"

From this bit if feels you're opening the door to other systems. My most recent experience is with Burning Wheel. Quick context of Burning Wheel So Burning Wheel is a dice pool system. You want to do something, the referee says it's covered by Skill A. If you have five in that skill, you roll...

D&D General They're Building A Memorial Game Table Sculpture In Honor of Gary Gygax

I agree. I have nothing against Gygax and am thankful for what he created. But asking people to give money to create an idol for a millionaire is kinda weird to me. Such projects are generally funded by the family, or the city/government.

    D&D General Games Economies

Taking all of it into account is maybe not always realist. But I generally spend some time before my campaigns to target a few financial hinge points that I want to make some sense. If it's a naval campaign, I might look into the financial details of ships, berthing, etc.
