RPG Print News – Warhammer, Old-School Essentials, and More

I don't know if you know about their core product: Outcast Silver Raiders. But it is absolutely phenomenal. I highly recommend it.

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

I just finished the podcast. It was a blast to listen to. I started to read some of Peterson's books this year, but I'm progressing slowly (life stuff) and the podcast was a perfect fit for when I was the dishes. I'm too young to have experienced the thick of what the podcast explore (born...

    Free League Year Zero Engine

I think it's a well designed engine. It's very simple to explain, it has an interesting twist with pushing your rolls and Free League have proven that its adaptable to different genres. My two hiccups are: It's dice pools, which I like, but dice pools are often a bit more tedious to roll...

Free League Announces Anime-Inspired Twilight Sword RPG

Yeah, same. First of all, I can't help but judge. It's a bit too close to the source material for my ethics. Secondly, it screams lack of imagination to me. I understand wanting to nail a vibe or an aesthetic that's already established, but there are ways to build upon something that exists...

Free League Announces Anime-Inspired Twilight Sword RPG

Man, talk about filing off the serial number. With Nintendo's legal history, I would not feel comfortable doing something branded so close. It looks like Link, it's a product that's aimed to reproduce the tone of the game serie, and the name of the product is part of the name of one of the games.

    What's Your Price Limit?

The bundle of PDFs. But someone mentioned it might be CAD (as I'm from Canada). It's possible, but there's no indication of it anywhere, which is quite common. I always take for granted my purchases are in USD unless it explicitly allows me to choose my currency. And 89$ CAD for two PDF is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running the shortest game?

My first suggestion, no matter what you run, would you to start right in the middle of it. In media res. They're not on their way to a dungeon, sitting around a fire and making plans for the last trek. They're not leaving the town on their way in search of the dungeon. They're sliding down a...

    What's Your Price Limit?

I agree. I also ponder on this. But I know that our reaction to prices and goods is much more emotional than rational. I'm mostly describing how I'm feeling. The conversation of value is interesting. Creators will talk about what it cost to create the product, or what it would take for it to...

    What's Your Price Limit?

I'm willing to follow a push in price with physical books (don't have a choice, shipping, customs and currency conversion from CAD doubles the price of books). But my limit for PDF is much, much lower. There is no universe where I will pay 50$+ for a PDF. And any bundle of Physical + PDF that's...

    What's Your Price Limit?

It's funny, I read this thread earlier this week and now it seems Draw Steel is finally available for purchase directly on their website... and it is 89$ for the PDFs! I've already seen a few reactions to the price of the PDFs. Draw Steel

What are your thoughts on roll-under/roll-high mechanics?

That's a bit of a drastic example. If the gap between your fastest character and the second fastest is the difference between the Flash and the Joker, then yeah, I don't see why we're rolling. However, in most games (including D&D) the gap is much more narrower. The odds are absolutely in the...

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

I have no idea. It didn't say. Gen Con 2025 Events It's interesting to look at the data. I have no idea what qualifies as an event or not. But it says the Avatar RPG had 130 events.

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

This is exactly my read too. Some strong IPs bring in fans that want to buy anything from the IP. And TTRPG books are generally very nice objects, that are made with passion. But the success of these Kickstarter does not correlate to the game being played. I was surprised to see quite a few...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

As someone that dove head first in the OSR like three years ago, a recurring pattern that I saw is that the definition is looser than most think. I've lurked this thread and it's obvious that certain elements like the "lethality" is part of the OSR experience for some, not for others. Games that...

    What's Your Price Limit?

I actually looked into the Galaxy book for Starfinder 2 a few week back and was shocked at the price increase. I'm from Canada, so we get wrecked with the currency conversion, the shipping and all that jazz. Paizo books used to be around 60-65$ CAD in my FLGS (around 45-50$USD). They are now...

D&D General Mike Mearls' blog post about RPG generations

Man, I got like two notifications of replies from the thread after I made it. Then nothing. I was kinda busy and thought "Oh well it's just not an interesting topic to people" then as my time frees up, I come here with my afternoon cup of coffee to see that the thread is over 21 pages long...

Phases of Growth in Game Design

I absolutely love the OSR and its multitude of products. But that's a gripe I have. The number of "new games" that are basically exactly B/X with a list of minor changes that fit on one sheet of paper is astounding. Thankfully, we're seeing bolder and bolder departures.

D&D General Mike Mearls' blog post about RPG generations

If there was a thread about his topic, I missed it. Mearls posted this blog article a little less than two weeks ago. It made its way in several communities I frequent so I got to reading it. TTRPGs: The Next Generation I'm really puzzled by it. It makes little sense to me. The lines he draws...
