D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

illusion (the classic schools still exist) and shapechanging/transformation cover the first and last, but ig you COULD have an emotion school? but to be clear, the spells in level up are mainly grouped by the classical schools. the others are more like tags or traits

    ZEITGEIST Zeitgeist Campaign Completed!

well, 20 active RHC field agents from the FLINT branch, to be specific. we don't know how many field agents the other branches have (though considering flint is the largest city in risur, i'd say the numbers for the other branches are similar if not lower).

presumably followed by "OH, THIS is when I would use this, how the HELL did we GET here???"

Level Up (A5E) A5E First Impressions

...yeah, that table doesn't say that anywhere. it consistently labels medium challenges as being (as close to) 1/3 the total party level (as possible). you MIGHT be mixing up total party level (which is the sum of the party's total levels) with AVERAGE party level (which is the average level of...

Level Up (A5E) A5E First Impressions

what are you looking at? i don't see a table that says a medium encounter is equal to the total party level anywhere in my copy of the A5e MM. edit: or do you mean it calls the goblin encounter a medium encounter? because the example itself does the same (and for a party of 3 level 1...

    D&D 5E (2024) Mob Rules

okay, it looks like the 2024 rules change how they present the 2014 rules here. im not sure the change would be particularly helpful, but then i don't really care for the mob rules in either, so im probably not the guy to ask.

ZEITGEIST Using Music in the Zeitgeist Adventure Path

i haven't started running zeitgeist yet (and i probably won't for a while - i'm a good ways into running a doomed forgotten realms campaign that, if all goes well, won't be ending any time soon), but i have an entire word document with songs for different parts of the campaign (primarily action...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

okay, but the idea of rolling con saves to avoid crapping yourself while fighting strahd is pretty funny, ngl

    ZEITGEIST Zeitgeist Campaign Completed!

cillian creed, macbannin's butler, is ex-rhc and a major villain in book 2. i think there's also an ex-rhc contact the players are set up to meet in book 7 but he gets killed and impersonated before they meet if im not mistaken

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

whether or not the spell is too strong is irrelevant to the question of what the spell does. you can always just ban it.

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

yeah, okay, cool, just make up stuff i never said, amazing. it's not the opposite scenario because of "muh player bias", it's the opposite scenario because the OP describes teleporting a hostile (edit: grappler, basically) (who would obviously attempt to resist), while you're describing...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

...except that's the opposite scenario from that described in the OP. it's straight up irrelevant. also, that's like...a completely standard use case for the spell. i just saw the wizard use that trick to save the rogue from water weirds this past saturday. i don't know why you think this is...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

i uh. i don't think a house cat is interacting with gut bacteria.

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

how do you fight gut bacteria? it's too small to interact with in any meaningful way (other then by killing its host, i guess).

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

this is, in the most technical sense possible, correct. it's also irrelevant, because "creature" in this context is a mechanical term to which these things do not apply. edit: it is also just not really useful. you wouldn't say the druid would be paralyzed or dominated if the fish were targeted...
