D&D General Anyone else go from 1st Edition to 5E?

I played B/X and 1E back in the 80s, then stopped just as 2E was coming out (my gaming group broke up around that time, because we all scattered when we started college). Fast forward to Fall 2014. I started seeing stories on the web along the lines of, “There’s a new edition of D&D, and it...

D&D 5E (2024) Idea for starting ASIs, three way split.

Realistically, the vast majority of players are going to either: a) put their ASI in their class’s primary stat, so that they can consistently be decent at what they do, or b) deliberately put the ASI in a secondary/tertiary stat for a specific character concept (“I want to play a Fighter...

D&D 5E (2024) Make the most outrageous claim about One

OneD&D robbed my Dwarf Cleric of his heavy armor, warhammer, and battle axe proficiencies. Then it set fire to my house.

D&D 5E (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

Your opinion is your opinion, and I’m not here to tell you you’re wrong, but… I recently started playing a Firbolg Artificer with Powerful Build, and I’m absolutely loving it. I envisioned the character as an inveterate tinkerer/packrat, and after every session I stock up on more mundane...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using COMMAND to break a caster's concentration?

Hand the enemy a flute and Command them to “perform.” (My limited experience as an amateur musician leads me to the opinion that playing an instrument requires concentration.) Or, point to your buddy and Command the enemy to “bless.” Bless is a concentration spell, so it would break the earlier...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part I: Artificer) Battle Smith Advances!

    Artificer, Armorer 9 Artificer, Artillerist 10 - 2 = 8 Artificer, Battle Smith 10 + 1 = 11

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

Create Water is a first level spell that lets you dump 10 gallons of water on a targeted area. I’d let you use it to help your buddy bypass the damage (or at least grant a save for half) for one round. Most parties would have access to Dispel Magic by level 5. I’d even let you empty your...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part I: Artificer) Battle Smith Advances!

D&D 5E (2014) The "Sealed Envelope" Character Campaign. Would you play?

In principle, sure. I’d even be willing to play a pre-selected class, since that could be an opportunity to get more familiar with the abilities of a class I haven’t played before (looking at you, Monk and Warlock…) I might even appreciate the RP challenge of playing a character I didn’t think...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5E Special

Well, I got married in 2018. Right around the same time the PHB peaked, too. But I seriously doubt there’s a connection.

D&D General All Basic, B/X and BECMI and Rules Cyclopedia set sales, from Ben Riggs.

This was definitely the case for me. I started with the B/X box sets, and begrudgingly bought B and E. When the Companion set arrived, I was glad to finally have the expansion/extension of BX that I’d been waiting for.

D&D General Which Previous Edition (poll; read OP)

I voted B/X. I haven’t played that system in almost 40 years. But the discussion threads about the sales figures that Ben Riggs has been posting reminded me what a powerhouse that system was, sales-wise. And it seems to be the basis of a host of OSR retroclones (which I have yet to try). But...

    D&D 5E (2014) Addicted to multiclassing

I did not multiclass at all in the first few campaigns I played in. But for a new campaign that started last month, I decided to try out a Bard/Rogue hybrid I had been kicking around in my head. And I have another campaign starting on Sunday, in which I’ll play a Battlesmith Artificer, with a...

D&D General As of 1998, 4,007,685 people played AD&D in the US, as estimated by Ben Riggs.

Poppycock. I was introduced to D&D by my cousin Steve. I was in Denver over the weekend for his wedding, and he confirmed that he was never contacted by Ben Riggs as part of his research. So the ACTUAL number should be AT LEAST 4,007,686…

Recommendations for an FLGS in Boulder, CO?

I had a chance to briefly check out B&R on my way into Boulder on Saturday. It is exactly as amazing as you all say. Fortunately, I will have time for a much longer visit tomorrow, as I head home. UN-fortunately, tomorrow’s visit is likely to leave a pretty big dent in my bank balance.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do ability scores cap at 20 instead of 18?

    1) 18 is more fun than 20. 2) A d20 roll caps at 20 (before modifiers). Your level caps at 20. So ability scores having a cap at 20 is synergy. It doubles down on the brand.

    D&D 5E (2014) Invisibility

I would rule that the item becomes invisible. Unless the player specifically asks that it remain visible for shenanigans. (Shenanigans should always trump RAW) A few months ago, I had a similar experience when my Arcane Trickster cast Mage Hand. The party was in a tavern when a brawl broke out...
