Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Dark Sun is anti-D&D. It was designed to be anti-D&D from the jump and had only grown more Anti-D&D as D&D has changed over 30 years. Which means either Dark Sun stops being Anti-D&D or Dark Sun completely severs from D&D and Becomes it's own thing. Obviously, the latter isn't looking very likely.

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

It was a total rejection of the subclass. People didn't want name, the lore and/or the features. So they took what already existed, gave it the generic name and tweaked a few things.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Some of the 5.24 species get that already, with spells or features that unlock at different levels (usually getting them all by 5th level).

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

The problem is that if you start gating important elements of a species behind feats (or something similar) then people will declare it a feat tax. Especially if it's something important like flight or large size or similar.

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

Honestly, i think WotC reacted to what it was being told. People didn't want the PDK tied to a dragon. They preferred the idea of old subclass, and they didn't want it tied to the PDK name to make it more portable. So WotC probably scratched their heads and said "ok..." And kept the few things...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

It's a side effect of D&D's long history with homebrewing that lots of people think they have a better (or at least different) way of doing things than the official game does. Which is why do many companies and Kickstarters opt for well worn tropes (horror, magicpunk, sword and sorcery...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

I just want to point out how absolutely right you are, to the point that some setting's rules felt more like a 3pp d20 game than an actual D&D rules expansion.

I think it's also a matter of why they are not happy. For example, I have no problem with the conceptual changes they made in Spelljammer, but I still find the box set lackluster unless you were just planning to run Light of Xarysis. There isn't enough meat on the bones, but the meat that is...

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

As the first real supplement (ignoring the few species and spells from the Elemental Evil Players Guide) it was very useful. It gave enough general info on the SC to work as a players guide for most of the APs during that time. Plus it had enough Player Options to feel like a reasonable rules...

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

There are nuggets you can mine from it, but mechanically it's very outdated. Every species (except ghostwise halfling) was redone in MotM, bladesinger and banneret is in FRAG. The cantrips are in Tasha. Undying patron is functionally replaced with undeath patron, arcana domain and swashbuckler...

You can easily convince me about the old APs, but Volo's and Xanathar's has nothing unique to the Realms. You might as well claim there was five Greyhawk books (Mordenkainen's twice, Bigby, Vecna and Tasha) by that metric.

I'm still waiting for that conversation about Ravenloft, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

I'd say I wouldn't hold my breath, but since Dhampir's don't need to breathe, that seems moot. We'll see on Tuesday

Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

Lot of assumptions there. We don't know what what (is any) form the future Ravenloft product will take, but the few hints have been the horror UA and Ed Greenwood's slip of the tongue. I feel more confident about a sourcebook with player facing options than CoS 2: Electric Boogaloo, but we won't...

Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

I mean, all they can do is boycott and complain, something D&D players have been doing for years now. I don't think it's going to change much; I doubt those parts will ever go free. But hopefully they think hard on future dlc packs.

Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

They (and reborn and hex blood) were in VGR. If they reprinted them with changes (I highly suspect dhampir will be undead type) they will be in the next Ravenloft/horror book.
