RPG Crowdfunding News - Caverns of Thracia, Bizarre Kingdoms, d12 Monthly, and more

Oof, Manifest has pretty priced itself out of my purchases due to its shipping rates. Nearly double the physical pledge cost to get the thing to Australia, even at the most basic pledge level. Yeah, i know there's still the pdf option, but I kinda irrationally hate those...

D&D 5E (2024) Which subclasses “should” have been in 2024

Barbarian: cut World Tree, put another new non-magical subclass in there instead Bard: not sure which I'd cut, but a bard subclass based on actual singing is about a decade overdue Cleric: no complaints Druid: looks ok actually, Sea is really a weather druid which was kind of a gap before...

D&D 5E (2014) Players, would you play in a multi-year campaign that used only the 5.1 SRD?

I’d do it. The lack of feats would be my biggest complaint, it really makes it hard to build a character towards your vision without those sometimes. But I could do it. Plenty of race options. The subclasses are restrictive, and unfortunately include lots of many bad or boring options...

RPG Crowdfunding News - Caverns of Thracia, Bizarre Kingdoms, d12 Monthly, and more

I'm looking at these three. Doesn't look too hopeful for poor old Fabled Empire though. Monsoon in particular interests me. We haven't got a heavily SE-Asian inspired setting that I know of, and this looks to carry a lot of Thai, Indonesian etc influences.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Session was … one of the tricky ones. Diplomatic negotiation got blown up pretty thoroughly by one player (new to the group) playing in an entirely in-character but disruptive way, and another (not new to the group but only just starting to come out of his roleplaying shell) kinda stampeding...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Bard"

Well, they’ve made some improvements but I think they’re fatally hamstrung by the decision not to just junk the fatally flawed 2014 bard and start again from scratch. Bards shouldnt be full casters, and bardic abilities being completely divorced from the Performance skill (or other skills, in...

WotC Has Kyle Brink left WotC?

That apology tour soured me on WotC almost as much as the OGL fiasco in the first place. Nothing says 'our regret is sincere and we have genuinely learned lessons' quite like blatantly lying to the faces of the people you're supposedly apologising to, while you're supposedly apologising to them.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

True. I normally think of it as held for ransom access, though…

    D&D 5E (2024) Could we get a Bloomburrow (Redwall) setting for 5.24?

Aargh, yeah, of course they were. Derp. That's who i meant. No i didn't, I put them in my first post in the thread ;)

    D&D 5E (2024) Could we get a Bloomburrow (Redwall) setting for 5.24?

The Animals of Farthing Wood Wind in the Willows Peter Rabbit/Enid Blyton There’s a quite large body of source material to draw from, especially if you include the ‘animals that talk living animal lives’ genre as well as the ‘talking animals that also walk upright and wear clothes and live in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Could we get a Bloomburrow (Redwall) setting for 5.24?

Oh, if WotC took this concept and made a whole sourcebook around the idea of 'non-fighting D&D' and chucked in half a dozen pages of rules and some DM guidance about how to make it work, and then made Bloomburrow the setting for it (like Ravenloft is the 'horror D&D setting') then I'd be all...

    D&D 5E (2024) Could we get a Bloomburrow (Redwall) setting for 5.24?

I know nothing about Bloomburrow, and that certainly sounds like something kids could have fun with, but running a game like this using D&D (or even an adaptation) seems a bit like smashing a square peg into a round hole. D&D is at base, a game designed entirely around killing stuff. While...

D&D General Where is the tv/movie drama about G. Gygax?

Did anyone else see the World of Darkness documentary, about the rise (and fall) of White Wolf? It was a bit of a weird watch, because the filmmakers focused so heavily on very deeply-immersed and expensively-costumed Vampire LARPers (who, let's face it, are a very small portion of the player...

Is Evil Genius Games Doubling Down On NFTs & Blockchain?

In white-room isolation, the only beef I have with them is the beef I have against pretty much any blockchain product, which is that they’re horrifyingly wasteful consumers of energy at dubious value during a time of increasing climate crisis. But I have the same objection to ludicrously big...

Is Evil Genius Games Doubling Down On NFTs & Blockchain?

Yeah, this. When it comes to organised play (which is a tiny proportion of the rpg market, let’s face it), there’s pretty much nothing the blockchain can do that a very boring traditional database couldn’t do. And outside organised play, there’s no use case for this stuff whatsoever. It looks a...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

There hasn’t been a ravenloft thread on enworld in years that didn’t eventually end up in this sort of discussion. It’s inevitable, roll with it.

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I’m adapting that one for my current Dragonlance campaign. It’s a much better way to tell Soth’s story than the whole ‘shapes in the fire’ thing that SotDQ does.

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I’m a bit fuzzy on the exact timing, but I think Al-Qadim is the only one that missed out. (Pharazia is vaguely Arabic-coded in a somewhat cringeworthy ‘it’s middle eastern, let’s make our Darklord a Mohammed analog, nothing problematic there!’ kinda way, but isn’t Al-Qadim even remotely) Which...

SmiteWorks Hires D&D Beyond Founder as Chief Development Officer of Fantasy Grounds

I suspect that this is not a capability that's THAT hard to do. It's far from uncommon. The difficulty, I suspect, will be in the FG legacy code, windowing toolkit/library etc etc. It can be much harder to retrofit capabilities like that onto an old app than it is to build a new app from the...

SmiteWorks Hires D&D Beyond Founder as Chief Development Officer of Fantasy Grounds

I would cheerfully commit murder (of someone i already didn't like much, at least) if it meant that FG had the ability to pop out stuff like the character sheet into their own windows outside the rest of the UI.
