Tips and Tricks to Running a Con Game

I had stupid behavior ruin a GURPS Fantasy con game I was playing in a few years ago. On two separate occasions some players, and not the same ones both times, went of on pointless tangents that obviously had nothing to do with the scenario. As a result, we didn't finish the scenario within...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

Speak for yourself! I've seen things you wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

Having secondary characters worked for Ars Magica and I can see it working for other games. It might not be a bad idea for some games I run where one or more player insists on making a character that's next to useless in a firefight.

    IN REMEMBRANCE--2025

Stamp was in a lot of great movies. I especially liked The Limey from 1999 where he plays an English criminal who journeys to the United States to investigate the death of his daughter.

What are your thoughts on TTRPGs with non-standard dice?

I still have the double deck of cards they sold for the original version of Deadlands. It was the one piece of the old collection I couldn't bear to part with.

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

I've been unable to run through the entire game a second time. I tried another Dark Urge playthrough, but I stalled in act 3 and just felt like I couldn't be bothered. I'll probably run through it again a few years from now when I've forgotten a lot of the game.

What are your thoughts on TTRPGs with non-standard dice?

There's two types of gimmicky dice I think. There's dice like those for Vampire 5th edition or FUDGE which are just d10s or d6s respectively with little symbols pertinent to their specific systems. You can use regular d10s and d6s for those games though without any problem. Then there are...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

Ships in Star Fleet Battles were designed with the thought they were constructed to perform other functions outside of a single combat scenario. A Federation PF was designed for short range patrols and had both limited range and function when compared to a heavy cruiser. The problem with games...

    Kickstarter: GURPS Mission X

Too much dialogue during an active battle is something of a pet peeve of mine. Shouting "Get to the choppa!" is fine, but I dislike when PCs try to convey complex ideas in paragraph form while dodging fireballs and axes.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

Another problem is one of skill allocation. In most games, if you're a crack pilot you're character is likely less capable in situations that down involve flying. And in most games you spend more time not piloting than you do piloting.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

I think any science fiction setting with a space navy resembling what we're used to with surface navies is going to require a shot of some good old fashioned suspension of disbelief. Make it a double if we've got faster-than-light travel and alien navies. Shows like Babylon 5 tried to strike a...

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

It's been more than 30 years since I've played SFB, but they have drones, and I think the Kzinti were famous for them. As I remember it, there were different types of drones, fast, heavy, ECM, and maybe a few others, and a ship could only control so many at any given time. A dedicated drone...

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

Didn't Baldur's Gate 2 start out with my character tortured and imprisoned, my beloved pal Khalid murdered, and my sister gets taken by the magic police for casting spells? The first BG was all about the child of a murder god running around trying to kill all his siblings so he could have the...

    Best Horror Role Playing Game

I will defend d20 CoC to my dying day. It's never been my preferred version of the game, but it was a well thought out game that did a great job adapting CoC to the d20 system. It did an especially good job of providing players and GMs new to CoC with information about what it was all about.

    Kickstarter: GURPS Mission X

That's exactly the beaty of GURPS, it's just I don't think that particular type of game is currently in favor. Rather than building a game from the ground floor, most gamers would rather buy something ready to play out of the box. But who knows? Maybe in 10-15 years GURPS will make a comeback?
