Fantasy Stories That Don’t Romanticise the Past

The big counterexample is Discworld, where a significant portion of the books are about making the world (or at least Ankh-Morpork) better through either social or technological progress. There's even one specifically about moving away from the hidebound prejudices of the past (Thud!). I know...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

Took us like 10 minutes to figure out first time, and we probably got some things wrong regarding timing (grenades generally have a timer fuse instead of going off on impact). Plus, while I'm not an expert on explosives, I think this is one of those areas where detailed rules don't lead to...

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition Is Coming in 2026

I'm assuming you're talking about 1e or 2e seeing as you're mentioning bonuses and 4e doesn't have that in the same way. So you mean the bit in the career description that looks something like this? These are your potential advances. You can spend 100 XP to either increase one of the values in...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I've mentioned this in other threads about GURPS, but as I recall GURPS 2e and original 3e had fairly reasonable lists of skills and advantages. Then came approximately three billion sourcebooks about all sorts of stuff, many written by people who were experts on that topic, and since they were...

You know that this is the Internet, right?

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Exactly. It would have been remarkable if the first year or so of 5.5 sales hadn't been stronger than the first year or so of 5.0 sales, given the immense growth the game has had in the intervening decade. The interesting thing would be to see how sales look over a longer period, say 5-10 years.

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I think Troubleshooters does a fairly good job there. In Troubleshooters, Complications are fairly standardized. For 3 Story Points, you get some sort of short-term disadvantage: -2 to certain rolls in a scene, or turning a success into a failure, or letting the villain get away because of your...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I think PF2 has a fairly good solve: guidance makes you immune to guidance for one hour (whether you use the bonus or not). So that means you save it for the rolls where it really matters, rather than just getting +1d4 on everything (or +1 in PF2, because of tighter math). I think it's mostly...

Renegade to Reprint Lords of Waterdeep

Sure, but it means they become hard to tell apart, particularly if not playing in very bright illumination. And from a mood POV, I'd rather have distinctive playing pieces and moody lighting than samey pieces and require bright light.

Gotta make, as one of our time's greatest lyricist said, number go up.

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

If I were to remake GURPS while still keeping it somewhat GURPS-y, I'd start by paring down the skill list to like somewhere between 10 and 25 percent of the current one, and refer people to specialization rules if they want to get more gnarly than that as well as have some GMing advice on...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

Binary: You either have advantage or you don't. There's no "I get +2 because I'm flanking and +1 for higher ground and +2 because they're prone." Once you have advantage, you don't need to go looking for more bonuses. Same thing with disadvantage. That speeds the game up somewhat...

Renegade to Reprint Lords of Waterdeep

Tyrants of the Underdark is one of those games that's low-key great. I and my friends have only actively gotten together to play it once, when I first got it, but whenever we're sitting around trying to figure out what to play it's been a hit. I have some minor issues with the physical...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I mean, back in the day fireball was pretty much the go-to offensive spell even at higher levels. But one can make higher-level blast spells better in ways other than just having bigger numbers. You can add various riders to them, bigger AOEs, selective damage, and things like that.
