D&D 5E (2014) Dragon Queen Question: Why Not Interrogate the Cultists?

Cultists may only know they are going to Waterdeep, may not even know about going past that until they get to Waterdeep. Maybe their commander knows.... maybe not. But then what.... You still need to keep heading north. plus, there are a lot of cultists, an outright fight may not go in their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternative Initiative: try this

For the opposite approach.... google Popcorn Initiative. Very briefly.... one person goes, and then chooses who gets to go next. Then that player (or monster) goes and chooses who gets to go next. You should check it out, it leads to some non-intuitive results.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternative Initiative: try this

Which is a pretty big benefit. Possible Solution: As you pull each card, place it in a row. (as playing solitaire). When you are done, every care will be laying down face up in order. When a creature uses a 1-round effect/spell, put down a marker at that location. The spell/effect is in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic item and identifying

I realize this may be based more on nostalgia rather than being 'better' or 'more fun'.... but I miss the days of hoarding every single item/weapon/armor you could come across. Then at the end of the day putting it all in a pile and casting Detect Magic. The few items that would glow you would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

As you say, this is a preference, so I am not trying to convince you otherwise. But for me... I like the idea of roleplaying a human that happens to exist in that world, using point buy feels more like I am designing an android instead. To me if feels unnecessarily artificial that all 5 PCs are...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Sure, and 3+3 is on-balance and in-general about the same as 3x3..... Your math was wrong for several reasons, your results were significantly off from the actual results. Its kind of sad you feel the need to continually defend them.

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

It doesn't have to. It says you need to load the ammunition, and it takes two hands to load a crossbow. We know this because we all know what a crossbow is and how it works, the same way we know that swords are made of metal, how trees work, and that you can't walk on water. The game rules use...

No one is 'preventing' it, it just isn't part of the baseline rules.... but I am assuming you already knew that....

Because its not "free enough' it is *free* as in 'not being used for anything else. You use two hands to fire the weapon, then you use one hand to hold the weapon and have one hand free.... that is the hand you use to draw and load.

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Because you were treating the 6 possible outcomes as the only possible outcomes, and you were treating them as having equal probability. Both of those are false, and yes it does make a significant difference in the resulting math. To look at it a different way, use your same method for a DC of...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Your math assumptions are off.... Lets try it a different way. You need to get a 16 for something and you are willing to use the Lucky ability if needed: Normally you will succeed 44% of the time, and about half of that you will not even spend a Luck resource If you create disadvantage, you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Odd-numbered ability scores

There is no difference between a 14 and a 15. Yes if you add 1 to each you get 15 and 16.... which are different. But that doesn't change the fact that 14 and 15 are the same. Right now every PC starts with all even stats if possible, and tries to never get odd stats.... there is no benefit...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

I have never seen anyone say that.... What they were claiming, is an 11th level fighter could fire his handbow 3 times, then fire his 'other' handbow once as a bonus action. That is not allowed, but... That same fighter could fire his handbow 3 times, and then fire the *same* handbow as a bonus...

Sorry but.... this clarification matches what he has said on twitter, and matches the RAW of the rules in the book. I think its a simple RAW ruling.

No.. the feat means what the feat says it means. You can't just add new meanings because you think it 'sounds right'. Yes, you are the DM, you can 'rule' that Polearm master means you are really good with polearms and thus always attack with advantage. But you can't say that is part of the...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Nope, because the MC Wiz/Sorc still doesn't have a rule that says "You can use your spell slots for cleric spells". The only way you can use MI for cleric spells and use it in you spell slots, is to have at least 1 level of cleric.

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

If you are a wizard, you have a rule saying 'you can use your spell slots to cast wizard spells' If you are a sorcerer, you have a rule saying 'you can use your spell slots to cast sorcerer spells' If you are a wizard with a sorcerer spell via MI feat, you do *not* have a rule saying 'you can...

You can operate it just, aim and shoot. you just need an extra hand to load it. Just like using a pistol in real life, you can shoot it with one hand, but you need two hands to load it.
