D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

I get that. My point is that I think the existing system in 5E allows for that flexibility so that you don't try and make things like 'Assassin' or 'Illusionist' a full class as past editions have, to sometimes... mixed results.

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

Honestly I generally agree with 5E's take. Going back through older editions it always kind confuses me that certain thing were considered to warrant their own classes, like Samurai, Illusionist, Assassin, and Invoker. There are some that I don't think a subclass cuts it for (Warlord and Shaman...

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

No? That's been a common criticism of 5E from the start.

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

For me the biggest pitfall of subclass design is that you can't try and balance a weak feature with a strong feature at a later level, or vice versa because there's no guarantee what level the campaign will go to. I was just reading Tome of Heroes earlier and noticed the hilariously mismatched...

D&D General Who is this made for (Not Beginners) - the New D&D Starter Set

They want D&D be to be everything it's ever been. It's pretty clear to me, especially after recently reading the opening of the 2024 PHB, that Crawford and the team were really trying to preserve the essence of D&D across the years. That includes the casual dungeon delves with emergent stories...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

There are Dragonborn and even Draconia (the kingdom Tiberius was from) in the animated series, though Tiberius himself isn't. Season 3 actually has a character that feels like a very on-the-nose take that to Tiberius.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

I know Mystara Dwarves being non-magical was a thing but I didn't think that applied to other settings. Is that why Dwarves in Dragon Age can't use magic?

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

I feel like this notion that the more recent stuff has been uber serious and grim dark is a bit weird. Campaign 3, I mean, this is the campaign where the crew literally pretended they were shooting a pornographic film... ...in a setting where it's not even been established that cameras exist...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

I do hope that Brennan isn't afraid to inject some more classic D&Disms into the game. It feels like Matt has been hesitant to use the more iconic D&D monsters. Remember CR were fighting Mind Flayers and a Beholder in their first arc but I don't think we've seen either creature since the...

I don't think a door counts as a corpse.... sounds like 'Speak With Objects' would be a better bet. There's even such a spell in Kobold Press' Deep Magic.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

You know, I imagine dragon hearts must be immensely powerful to pump all that blood around such a large powerful body. I'd imagine even breaking a capillary results in a torrent. Fighting dragons isn't about hitting their vitals, it's about bleeding them until they don't have any fight left in them.

I mean, it's pretty on brand for the permanent Renaissance-era trappings of the Forgotten Realms it feels pretty well at home. Maybe less so in Greyhawk or Eberron.
