D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

You have a task to do, do you sit for 24 hours before taking a break and then doing it? Unless the character is Deadpool, I expect they do not know rules of the game, nor can they epxploit them, for them it is life and an adventure.

Bless is great on a Monk, but then again, so is Hunter's Mark.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

If your family and friends look for exploits to one up you all the time, it's not a healthy table at all.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's not understanding the rules, ot's exploiting it. At my table you can do an exploit once, maybe twice, then I will ask you to stop because it gets boring. Find a new trick. And a lot of tables would qualify it as That Guy behavior because it is very much like that time Critical Role's...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

But that is still really weird and borderline That Guy behavior. Play with people who want to actually play, if this is such a big issue for you.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

This is weird and would get people labelled as "That Player" at many tables. Find better players or talk with them about it bothering you. And still, a lot can chamge in 32 hours, villains in dungeon won't sit idly while pcs twiddle their thumbs waiting to rest.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

No, the "we will sit and do nothing for 24 hors just to rest" is stupid and I refuse to believe anyone would do that. If this is an issue, stop playing with weirdos who do this. And really, if you have players give you up to 32 hours, while they sit idle...well, a lot can happen in that time...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

What is pointless? I did that for larger modules like Isle of Dread, and it was still a time-saver to choose which encounter to use in advance. Also, sometimes it's not feasible or worth it to create 10+ random encounters for short module, instead of picking the good ones. Ignore the minions...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I never roll for random encounter, I always choose to have one prepared in advance because I use VTT and I need time to make tokens before any combat.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

In 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide it is written you can only take a long rest if your party a) reached their daily XP budget of defeated encounters b)24 hours of in-game time have passed since last one.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Solution: Focus fire on the boss, who is likely the commander or doing something important. Once boss falls, small fries may run away. I once had Boss performing ritual on a rock in the middle of lava lake. PCs entered the map from nearby cave entrance. Booss wasn't paying them attention at...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I fugred out my own explanation why bosses die too easily. Because there is no scenario in which focusing fire on the boss is not the optimal strategy. What's the best solution to fight involving serious enviromental hazard? Focus fire on the boss so he won't punch you while you avoid the...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I explained througfully that when I said RPGs are nto games I meant very specific board games, because you compared them to Risk in particular. Keeping harping on it after I explained, in reply to explanation even, feels like you ignored what I just said because it's easier to pretend I said...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

My game, before we put it on hiauts to play Mage: the Ascension, was three multiclassed characters and one single-class. And that last one was player who really doesn't like complexity.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

I think Divination Wizard alone is capable of power-creeping enough to make other classes irrelevant, so is Bladesinger. I think the main reason why wizards are now rare is that Intelligence is just not as good stat as Wisdom and Charisma - if you put the class features aside, you just get more...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I meant game in the same cathegory Risk is a game - a board game. While RPGs are games, cannot claim they are the same as Risk or Root or Ticket to Ride. A lot of friends I have who are board game geeks and refuse to touch na rpg. Trying to claim D&D is the same as Risk is ridiculous to me...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

This is inherently impossible. Your foundation decides what the game is about and who is it for. There is only as far as you can homebrew to modify the foundation before you would be better off picking another game altogether. And, quite frankly, the foundation you and Micah describe is such...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

And yet most of time they did pull out magic it was flashy, so the difference was functionalyl nonexistent. And then people complain legendary resistance is just "nuh uh, I win" and makes them waste their turn doing nothing. Which is why I think these spells need to be nerfed and isntead even...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

This is my issue with 5e design: All "Save or lose" spells should be eliminated or nerfed. In exchange all spells should do bigger thing on a failed save and lesser thing on a succesful one, so even if enemy saves, it never feels like you wated your turn. it's jsut that no spell should be able...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Good thing none of points I raised were concerning popularity or recentcy, could you actualy adress them properly? Dragonlance by all means had flashy magic, Raistlin once solved a problem by teleporting a whole ancient green dragon in front of Lord Soth and watch them duke it out, that's very...
