D&D General How much Ars Magica is in Dungeons and Dragons 3e?

There is also the dual stat adventure Black Monks of Glastonbury which has some 3e mechanics for doing Ars Magica in D&D. I believe the big Ars Magica Order of Hermes edge against other spellcasters, the Parma Magic or Magical Shield magical skill, is done in 3e as a feat which gives spell...

D&D General How much Ars Magica is in Dungeons and Dragons 3e?

My understanding is that while flexible verb noun casting was the big innovation, it also had levelled spells like D&D (just not vancian slots and spell levels generally going up to 40 or so). So while you had magical skills in Creo (create) and Ignem (fire) and could spontaneously come up with...

D&D General How much Ars Magica is in Dungeons and Dragons 3e?

My memory is that abilities in Ars Magica are similar to ability modifiers in 3e. AM Mages are designed to be more powerful than grogs (warriors) or companions which is different from the 3e goal of all classes being balanced against each other. AM balance comes more from the troupe style play...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

I don't think that definition of a god quite works. You can have major gods like the Olympians in Greek Mythology, but then you also have things in Greek Mythology like Nymphs who are minor nature gods and can be a personification of a specific land feature or even a specific tree. There is a...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Things on the sorcerer spell list that stood out to me (Mostly stuff that was previously druid). Looking back I realize a couple were in the 14 sorcerer as well, so this is more a 5e difference than a 24 one. I played and DMd a bunch of sorcerers in the 3e/Pathfinder 1e era (a lot of NPCs) but...

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

King of Atlantis so king of Camelot makes sense to me. Never seen him as leader of the Justice League though.

Lots of ways to go with Arthurian themes. For Sir Clark I'd probably go with something more emphasizing goodness.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Anything where magic/psychic abilities are in born and magic users are feared. Wheel of time comes to mind. There is the Tower which teaches skill but the power is just in certain people and not others to start. The White Cloaks hunt down those with the power. So some versions of Merlin are he...

    Morality of mind control…

The last time I used charm person as a good PC I used it to interrogate bad guys instead of intimidation. I was really sick of threats of torture coming from other (not good) PCs. I remember using it on a guard and taking him out to lunch/buy drinks at a bar off duty to get him to chat and...

    Best published superhero adventure?

The drawback of temporarily licensed titles. I always wanted the old DC Magic, Watchmen, and Whos Who sourcebooks. I would like to get PDFs of old Doctor Who, MERP, The Willow Sourcebook, Thieves World, and others as well.

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

I think it is going to vary a lot based on the actual cosmology, the specific magics available, the specific gods involved, and the history of the world and its cultures. D&D afterlife varies - in 4e the gods of knowledge and death do not know what happens to souls after they leave their period...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

I've done the reverse. :) I played a (pathfinder 1e) sorcerer with the stars (mythos) bloodline where his noble family generations earlier had engineered a mythos encounter/event thing in their ancestral hall to develop a sorcerous bloodline among them.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

It doesn't give you magical knowledge, it gives you magical power. Anybody can make a pact, it does not require any study or learning or work the way wizardry does. Anybody can make a pact, not everybody is born with magical power. You could narratively say a pact was how you gained sorcerous...
