    D&D General Dmg previews up

Exactly! And a Google search will be far more effective for any specific DM to find something relevant to their game than 100 pages of variant rules in the DMG would be. Another cool way to emphasize this would be for the Greyhawk setting guide to have a few variant rules laced into it.

    D&D General Dmg previews up

Right, but how many DMs want variant rest rules, slow natural healing and full encumbrance? Ask 100 DMs what variant rules they'd like in the DMG, and you'll probably get 100 different answers. There are thousands of knobs that could be turned by any DM, depending on what they and their table...

    D&D General Dmg previews up

Regarding variant rules, it feels like rather than give pages and pages of rules that only a small percentage of DMs might use, that they will reduce it down to perhaps two 'master' rules. DM Rulings (in the moment) and DM House Rules (permanent changes). Give a couple of play examples for...

D&D 5E (2024) Why are weapon masteries limited?

This thread made me think of a related question. You choose a specific weapon, not the property to know, right? So you choose Dagger (Nick) but that doesn't mean you can also use a Light Hammer (which also has Nick) unless you swap it out on a long rest, right? I can't find anything that...

    D&D General Dmg previews up

Love that in chapter 2 they are going to give advice on running Social and Exploration encounters in addition to running combat. My guess is this will be the section where they also talk about DM rulings over rules and thus making the game work for you and your table.

    D&D 5E (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

Right, I always forget that my houserule for Dispel Magic isn't the actual rule.

    D&D 5E (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

Well, the rules for Temp HP state they stay until you lose them or take a long rest, so for the Druid they stay. It's only because of the rule for concentration that Polymorphers lose them when the spell ends. At least, that's my interpretation, I could be wrong! Don't think it's a big deal...

    D&D 5E (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

That's exactly the difference. Druids don't concentrate on Wildshape, so the Temp HP aren't subject to the rule with concentration that the effect goes away.

    D&D 5E (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

Hmmm, I would read that as the general rule for Temp HP that is changed by the specific rule around concentration spells. The Temp HP rules state that 'some spells and effects confer Temp HP' and again, the rule for concentration states that the effect of the spell goes away when concentration...

    D&D 5E (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

The temporary hit points are an effect of the spell, and the rules for concentration state that you lose the effects of the spell when you lose concentration. Therefore, once you lose concentration, you lose the temporary hit points as well.

What are you reading in 2024?

I'm halfway thru The Doors of Midnight, sequel to the excellent The First Binding by R.R. Virdi. Highly recommend. I'm also halfway thru The Wheel of Time series (my first time reading). Can't believe I waited so long to pick this series up. Unfortunately, I'm in book 7 where things really...

Rings of Power is Back [+] Appreciation

Yes, this has been great! It feels like where they are going with this is that the Orcs will be fully enslaved/ensorcelled by Sauron (exactly what Adar fears) and that is why they end up being the way they are depicted by Jackson's work. Makes it a bit of a tragedy, IMO. The other thing I'm...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

Thinking about monetization, turning 'fans' into consumers I would bet is a top priority for WotC to increase revenue. And it appears that the way they are doing that is by making the game more accessible to first time players via a much better PHB (that teaches new players how to play) and DDB...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Alpha Playtest Report

Yes, absolutely. While the pre-made adventure the Alpha playtest came with could be run entirely in the game engine, with PCs exploring the map, you could also set up individual battle scenes (or even create one on the fly) for those set piece encounters. One thing I want to take a deeper look...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Alpha Playtest Report

@MonsterEnvy just got the invite today. Want to say there were about 30 or so monster minis, and for PCs and NPCs a mini builder that lets you choose Human Dwarf or Elf and then select hairstyles, skin tone, eye color, clothing, etc. I'll take a count of the monster minis when I test it next...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Alpha Playtest Report

Got an invitation today to the Project Sigil Alpha Playtest! Was worried if my 2022 HP business laptop (i7 1.33Ghz, 16 GB Ram) with no dedicated graphics card would be able to run it, and am happy to report that it was! First a note on the NDA (in case anyone is worried). While I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

I would say that we are in the early adopter phase of 2024 rules. I think the real test will be how sales do once all 3 books and the new starter set are released.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Think I'm going to test it out for a while, with the caveat to my player that we might go back to it costing a BA if it seems like too much once she hits 5th. My sense is at most it's going to add another 7 or so damage per combat (from the extra BA attacks with a short sword) which I can't...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

While so far my '24 Ranger is happy with the class, I am considering one change to HM. Instead of a Bonus Action, I would allow HM to be applied when the Ranger hit's with an attack (both initial casting and moving it once the original creature is killed. Spell slot is expended but no...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I think that's spot on. After only 2 sessions, my '24 Ranger player is already adjusting tactics based on the situation. HM and dual weilding for a single big monster, Longbow and sticking to the shadows for invisibility (Gloomstalker) with no HM for large groups of weak enemies. As she...
