If I ever rpg again, my "next game" will probably not be fantasy/D&D genre, so any D&D is highly unlikely. Even if it's fantasy, it'd likely be a different system, although BX/BECMI/OSE or an adjacent D&D-esque OSR ruleset is also possible.

This is the sort of thing that gets established in session zero, imo, before the campaign begins. Personally I can go either way as a GM, but the players always know in advance how things are being run.
