Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

This in no way means they aren't offshoots of the Quori. Or in any way out of line with an Aberrant Mind. You just need "an alien influence" and "rejects the corruptions of the Quori" doesn't mean it's not there.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

And the weird thing is that I suspect there is more to be said about generic systems. I was commenting over in the Daggerheart thread that I think Daggerheart is on the way to being a modern generic system, supportive without being opinionated the way a lot of modern games are. (Not that I mind...

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

Meanwhile we already have D&D psionics in 5e that have mechanics and power scale that suit 5e. We've Aberrant Minds, GOOlocks, Soulknives, Psi Warriors, and arguably more. The depiction of psionics in D&D 5e is already broad and varied with multiple visions. This tries for a different vision...

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

In the case of Eberron, of course, psionics are largely connected to Quori who are explicitly evil Outsiders (aberrations in all 5e statblocks I've found). To quote from the Eberron Wiki: The most notable psionicists belong to the powerful illithid race (which has earned the nickname "mind...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

Yeah, 5.24 emanations are broken. And the three spells you listed are all wisdom saves that require Concentration. Meanwhile in 3.5 Hypnotic Pattern was a second level spell. Fear took a significant nerf from 3.5 as you can make saves if you can just get out of LoS which is generally not that...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

That's partly because power levels aren't assessed in isolation. In 3.5 if you wanted to take out a 20' radius worth of enemies you'd probably cast Stinking Cloud. No spell resistance applied (unlike Fireball) and the enemies would lose all their actions except a single basic move for as long as...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

Illusionists get decent stuff. Minor illusion as a bonus at 3 is genuinely good and two free summons per day is ... worse than morphing illusions but a decent bridge.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Yeah, I'm on the same page. I think that Daggerheart does 5e better for most tables than 5e but I don't think that's where its strength truly lies. Instead I think that it's an excellent gameplay engine for heroic games in just about any setting. It's not the tight We Are Doing This of e.g. a...

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

I assume it means it took a beating for breaking certain playstyles and is being dropped.

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

The problem with wanting to "unspookify psionics" is that being spooky is why telepaths (in specific) attached to the Far Realm work well. Once you are a mind reader with any sort of mind control you're inherently creepy. And removing the spooky elements doesn't make them less creepy, it just...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

I can't agree here; oD&D is primitive, not sloppy. Gygax and Arneson were working out things as they went and it shows. (It's also unclear). You need to wait for AD&D before the subsystems multiplied and the design got sloppy.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

I'm going to say "people are playing different games at the same table and all playing the games they like and interacting with each other" is a strength of a good class based system. And that it's something I get from both oD&D and Apocalypse World and other good PbtA games (and Smallville).

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

So if we're running a 60 session campaign with the same characters I need there to be character growth and progression. Which means either I want a skill based system or at least ten levels if we're using a level based system. And I'm ruling out most PbtA and FitD games here and Fate as although...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

I have never seen why classes can't flex anyway (especially between the dump stat choices) - warlocks I think should be Int or Cha. For that matter I'd argue for flexing sorcerers for Cha or Str.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

By the time you hit 2e, no. But there absolutely 100% was a functional difference between what oD&D called a Referee and a Storyteller. A Storyteller did not share authority over the PCs with other random groups in a West Marches style game. Things had changed. PbtA changes them differently but...

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

Charisma isn't the same as Comeliness. The Mule is 100% charismatic and compelling even if ugly. And beholders are Charisma 17.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

This is an easily overlooked benefit of the wizard. Intelligence is a great skills-stat and Investigation is IME the second most important skill in the game (only behind Perception) while Arcana is a good candidate for third. And 2024 wizards both have their primary stat supporting them (when no...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Most generic games I can think of, like GURPS or Fate, are clear products of a worldview and are because of that actually decently thematic. It's why people used to joke you could play GURPS in any setting but you'd still be playing GURPS.
