I am looking at the "HD are a free resource" concern, for sure. My group uses them fairly consistently for healing, so expending them for blood magic may be a cost to far for them. Other groups I've been ignored them, and since there is no effect for being out of them, it would truly be a free...

Wonder how they calculate jump distance?...feet equal to STR "score". Edit: and I still use roll under for a few things.

Priest spheres were so handy. Now a days (and for a 6th E) I would just say normal list is from the PH, any other "sphere" like spells you have to learn. That way you could introduce a whole slew of shadow spells for the god of shadows, and all the other clerics of the world would not...

Mine short rest on occasion. So really I need to come up with a reason to use/or stockpile them*, otherwise the blood mage will just go nova. Of course, I would then remind them that they only gain half back on a long rest... *expend them all gain a level of exhaustion?

Talisman 4th edition revised is my favorite. But it recently went out of print, and a few of the expansions i wanted have gone through the roof in price.

Agreed with 99% of your thesis. Well said. its just that it seems ALL (especially casters) are unique. Creating an occasional dissonance for my players. I could provide an actual convo that shows how it goes down, but i will just do what ive already done...when PCs encounter a generic...

Agreed. My concern is that nearly all of the ones that appear to represent the various levels of "generic mage" have these non-spell special abilities. Thats all.

I would like to add that it seems that people are conflating two different concerns into NPCs should be built like PCs, and its causing a lot of "debate" a. Should you build NPCs "like" PCs? and b. Should you build NPCs that resemble PCs? IMO; Building NPCs like PCs is too cumbersome...
