D&D 5E (2024) Skill Mastery as an idea

If one has a good GM, they'll attempt to fix the asymmetrical issue which exists with the game in the first place.

True. That is probably why I'm not a fan of John Wick's fall (end of 3# and in 4) and the falling damage system within D&D.

We have also seen scenes where the hero also abides by the villain's orders. We have also seen John Wick survive falling from unbelievable heights, where some of us inwardly groan. It really depends what kind of fiction you're looking to emulate at the table.

We had a Table Decision when the players did this at our table to an NPC, that same could be applied to them.. the players agreed to it. There are many ways one could go and one would have to consider the fiction in play, most importantly who the villain is - i.e. if the example above was a...

Here is what I find funny (and I haven't read all the posts, but just a post here and there) Ron Edwards does this deep theory crafting on RPGs - talks about Simulationism etc. But then when it suits the argument, people here imply D&D isn't simulationist at all and pushback against D&Ders...

What do you do when a Player dies?

We've lost one player and he was absolutely an amazing individual. I got to know him through his nephew when I was looking for new players online. And as it turned out he was 4 direct steps removed from the person, my oldest friend, who introduced me into the hobby (small world). Towards the...

That is quite a few games - lots of cool ideas I suspect in that pool! We are certainly spoiled for choice.

Lol. We aren't narrative, I have no real experience with playing narrative games. I'd be doing a massive disservice to that style I think. It's only what I've picked up from here, links provided by narrative players and some youtubes. We've got a hybrid thing going on in a traditional D&D...

He's joining our table, our ways. If I were joining another table I'd acclimatize to their style of play. We have a reward system in play and decisions like the one he made would exclude him from such reward system. In any event I asked when he picks his character's TIBFs he considers how easy...

The game was created with hit points and never moved past that point. That doesn't conflict with the fact that many simulationists prefer to remove/reject neo-gamist techniques or add-ons. For example many dislike Inspiration. And I'm sure you'd agree it is much easier to reject/remove gamist...

I mentioned it upthread that D&D sadly trains players to act in ways that many DMs feel is out of character for their creations. Lanefan mentioned a similar thing that only rational choices are made which always happen to be the most optimal. The game promotes min/maxing due to its style of play...

Out of interest Micah in the D&D games you run do you allow NPCs to persuade and/or intimidate PCs via the skill system?

True. But that doesn't mean that crowd wishes for MORE gamist structures.

D&D worships at the altar of the HP god. Character death is very much part of the game. Many rules revolve around dying and death. Has the game pushed the envelope further from perma-death over the years with hit point bloat, permanent level and ability drain, Revivify, death saves, save end...

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

Exactly. There are a number of ways this can be done... Reduce starting point buy Make Long Rest require 24 hours or longer Increase damage by monsters by a die Give monsters a Feat or Class Feature for every 4 HD. ...etc

    Any Good Puzzle Resources?

You could run through some of the Dark Parable puzzles which are free on YouTube. Some of them are suited for younger players but they may prove inspirational. I'm also a fan of the soundtracks of the ones my wife has played (the first 5)

I do not think we should be reflecting the argument as an either or. Item loss is a consequence that many simulationists adhere to. I do though think a GM has to be careful how they navigate the fiction for the item loss. And I believe that is where you are coming from, in that we cannot be...
