    LLMs as a GM

Thanks for that information. It's excellent to learn from someone who has more experience than I do. I feel like the token problem is actually a good reason to keep the sessions size limited and the number of sessions limited. At least, that was what I was thinking while reading you answer...

    LLMs as a GM

For those curious to the actual text in play. Here is an example: PS - This came after it offered suggestions of heading to the previously discussed location. But instead, my character decided to take a detour. (From this description, I hope you can see it is a bit different from a video game...

    LLMs as a GM

Great answer. I agree with every single one of your points. It took me quite a while to learn that as well. Fortunately, I learned some of that while just going over the rulebook with it. The token thing is very very real. Which is why summaries need to be detailed, yet clear and concise.

    LLMs as a GM

I do think this is a little different than a typical computer RPG. It is really a new frontier. I think that is what drove me to do it. To, you know, see the hype. I also wanted to see if I could teach it to think within certain parameters. In this case, game mechanics and the rules associated...

    LLMs as a GM

Sorry for the second reply, but I just wanted to say thank you for that bit of information. I asked Gemini this question: "Hi Gemini. I am back. (It was quick, I know.) I have a question for you about our campaign: Approximately how many sessions do you plan to have for this storyline? We have...

    LLMs as a GM

After each section of rules, I asked it if it had questions. It always did. I often answered those using examples, which were eventually placed in the frontload documents. Sometimes, it also needed non-examples to utilize the rule or lore correctly. I have also added those. That process took a...

    LLMs as a GM

That is interesting. Maybe it would be smart of me to add in a desired number of sessions for the frontload document. As for always succeeding, it has asked me to roll the dice for my characters, and they have failed often. It doesn't seem to have difficulty describing how the character fails...

    LLMs as a GM

Did you do a dedicated dataset outside the LLM for this? After a while, it will forget your original upload, at least that has been my experience. It might take a while, but it will happen unless you have a dedicated dataset for it to utilize a retrieval system for. (I think that is called RAG.)...

    LLMs as a GM

Just wanted to share my experiences at having an LLM (in this case, Gemini) act as a gamemaster. I have completed five sessions, each that ran a couple hours long. The system I taught it was my own. The lore it used was written by me, although I gave it creative license to make-up anything it...

    The EN World Selfie Thread

Had to find the shot with my D&D shirt. This was the only one I could find. ;) Great dinner, good friends, and an awesome RPG session the day after. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I might add to the bolded statement that they also have nostalgia (for some), and more importantly, boatloads of lore attached to them. While mechanically, they may be "just preselected feats," they are so much more to the player that visually imagines their character.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Quite a while ago, this community had an argument - The Buttons and Dials Argument. To create a class or culture or background, it needs to push buttons (generate interest in the player & GM) or turn a dial (leverage in-game mechanics to alter game-play) or both. Players prefer both, but lean...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

If they wanted to make less money and tell shareholders their business is not expanding, you are correct. But in the end, it is a business, owned by shareholders, who demand an ever-increasing return on profits. That is probably both, a blessing and a curse for an RPG gaming company.

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

I started with an explanation of how the undead work in my world. Bloater A bloated and puffy dead corpse. Its skin white and blue, with puss leaking from open sores. It limps along slowly, but with purpose. Its mouth is always open, and from its throat can be heard a gross gagging, as if...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

True, but what did you expect them to do? If they placed classes out there that were of equal or lesser value, despite changing creatures to qual or lesser value, then players would stick to 5e. It is a terrible bind they are in. Increase player potential or not do well. As far as creatures...

D&D 5E (2014) If you could run or play in any D&D 5e campaign right now, which would it be?

I'm with Clint. I have it and ran it a long time ago but would love to be a player in the 5e world and explore it. The other is a bit more futuristic. But, it would be fun to take the hundreds and hundreds of pages I've written for my campaign world and see what an AI could do with it. That...

Worlds of Design: Magic, Magic Everywhere

I think as a DM, you give them many magic items. A few are ones they use all the time - others are experimental or designed for specific situations. Giving someone a gem that grants them an aura of defense, thus increasing their armor class by one once a day, is a good magic item to use all the...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

I actually don't think it'll be a problem. Art, even with AI, will be appreciated. The actual problem is going to be keeping artists motivated to continue their craft. I mean, the second someone spends nine hours painting a rose, and then, they ask AI for a little assistance, and poof, in 2...
