    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

It's a TTRPG, all weapons are props. What matters is the fictional descriptions you give. Lots of the Null abilities are perfectly suited for a fictional tweak to become teh sort of preternaturally skilled swordsman like a Zatochi; or blend in with the standard martial arts based swordplay of...

    Drakkenheim Daggerheart Campaign Guide Announced.

...aren't you supposed to start at level 3? 60 hours for two levels of play? edit: I will say that DoD is functionally a mega dungeon setup. It's basically Warhammer's Mordheim with the serial numbers filed off, inclusive of I Can't Believe It's Not Skaven and Wow This Sure Isn't Wyrdstone from...

    Drakkenheim Daggerheart Campaign Guide Announced.

It's pretty sandboxy with a lot of factions that are open to the players to link into, and lots of motivations presented to be goal-forward for play. Pretty excellent, and I'm curious how they're going to wrap the complications into the GM guidance.

A Solo + some Hordes or similar as minions (something to either threaten from range or get up in faces depending on how you build the solo) + an Environment with ground features worked pretty well to do some serious challenge to my T1 party. I don't imagine that would change much going up...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

I think Draw Steel! might be a perfect game to use the 4e Neverwinter Campaign Setting with. Nice an open sandbox, the Theme backgrounds can be overlayed on a DS! character without issue; the Shapeshifter stuff can be a Complication (there's one there already for wolves); etc.

    Drakkenheim Daggerheart Campaign Guide Announced.

Drakkenheim is a pretttyyyy open city adventure thing even if there’s some narrowing/gates there. A cleaned up flow and emphasizing the personal quests in char creation could work really well. Interesting.

@Campbell do you see Montages working as the sort of objective-focused scene mover a la 4e SCs? We wrapped up the "tutorial" portion of the Tomb last night, I'm enjoying the GM side of combats a lot. Players did some cool stuff (the Talent telekinetically grabbing the Null to pitch him into a...

I have a player who continues to maintain that the 4 attribute dice resolution mechanic is his favorite system out of anything he's played so far. Roll two dice, beat a set of presented target numbers. Ez.

The absolute best intro to a game I'm aware of.

Brief foreshadowing mostly to show how the villain is Doing Stuff, far less than the usual read-aloud text you see in a D&D campaign.

D&D General Stop Yapping, Start Playing: Trimming GM Descriptions

Ok but what about full paragraph length read-aloud text? :P Hitting 2-3 senses to evoke the spirit of the place and drop a couple hooks for the next questions to examine the place more fully is excellent. The scent of aged lavender fills the air? Where's it coming from? Can I tell what the...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Yeah. I had to read the minion rules multiple times to fully absorb them - but basically they’re a pool of HP, and so if the total damage dealt is > then an individual’s you overkill appropriately if more are in range.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

There was definitely a bit of "new game with a lot of tags/keywords/rules" to work through tonight, but we had a lot of fun wading in to teh Delian Tomb. It's not as interesting an opening as the Road to Broadhurst (or as varied), but I think the way it slowly unlocks the sheet/actions helped us...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

I think that maybe we’re seeing a lot of recent games picking a narrower area of focus and designing as much rules overhead around that as they need to hit the game feel they want. If we’re defining “crunch” as “has enumerated subsystems the game expects you to use” then yeah, I think lots of...

That rat encounter looks inspired for something so early in a game experience.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I saw an interesting post over on Reddit about death move and scars/Hope loss, suggesting that it rapidly gets quite punishing and throwing out some alternative ideas that I thought were actually really solid. To @Reynard 's idea, one thing they added in there was "write down a negative...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Yeah to me that’s still way too many for a game with a lot of tactical combat. My group of pretty on the ball and dedicated players were struggling to keep all the little bits of Daggerheart abilities straight 5 sessions in, in part because it actually can have quite a few steps and maths per...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

There's a lot of stuff in DS I see as trying to walk the line of "impactful without getting too complex." So you can stack things RAW in a way that say 5e may not allow, but not as far as the near-mandatory buff/debuff game I understand PF2 requires; or the hilarious maze that is 4e's +2s all...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Already answered above, but part of the goodness there is small bits of math required. +2/-2 when your core stat is unlikely to scale past +5 IIRC? is pretty easy; simply shifting your result left or right a success tier is even easier since the tier outcomes are written with your ability. I...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

The upside is that DS has a bias towards always letting you do something on a turn. It’s not very cinematic to fail a Save Ends roll and then go “welp.” So most of the conditions are “take a Bane on a power roll (unless)” or “only take one action” etc.
