D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

That's why I'd love to see it replaced with fun abilities used 3x day, like the monster rips the magic from you and wraps it around himself, gaining +3 AC for 2 rounds. And other things like that.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Huh. Having not switched to 5.5e, I didn't realize that healing had been buffed. I thought the whole point of increasing monster damage was to bring them more in line as level appropriate challenges so that folks didn't have to throw deadly+++ encounters at the party to challenge the PCs.

I honestly get where folks like you are coming from, but personally it just never bothered me past a small disappointment that the new stuff wasn't that useful to me. That's my main beef with the 5e setting lore. There isn't nearly as much of it as was crammed into the 3e Forgotten Realms...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The math didn't change. 5.5e only made minor changes to things in order to keep backwards compatibility, so the base problems of 5e are still present. So yes, he can be talking about 5.5e as well.

Damage was also much lower in 1e and 2e. 3e brought in an increase in damage and hit points.

It's limited, where MR/SR was not. It's 3 times spread out over the entire party. With MR/SR, the entire party can be hit by it every round for the entire fight if they are all casting spells.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

You need to get out more. Just google large flat plains and look at all the different pretty pictures of very flat land for miles. Um. A metric crapton of DMs use them. In addition to getting out more, you need to learn what a Strawman is. What I said ain't it.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

First, when it's not possible to ambush someone. There aren't always hiding spots. Second, I didn't say no ambushes. I said they wouldn't always be effective. You're arguing that on a flat plain with no hiding spots for miles and the PCs inside a clear dome, the enemy is going to be able to...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I think it was because a lot of people complained about a monster's MR/SR(depending on edition) completely negating the spellcaster's turn without the monster even having to roll a save.

Exactly! I completely ignored the major 4e changes and my campaign continued on unfazed. We've continued to have a blast in the Realms up through today and I expect well beyond. If something new happens that I like, I simply absorb it into my Realms.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

If it's every time, it's absolutely the DM being adversarial to the players and just acting to give his creatures the counter to the players actions. The enemy wouldn't be able to do that anywhere near 100% of the time. If it's sometimes, when it makes sense independent of player actions for...

Some of us aren't adversarial when we DM, so they don't always have dispel and aren't always able to set up an effective ambush.

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

The hiding rules. The Ready Action changes. The removal of dragon fear from dragons. There are quite a few more that I've seen mentioned in threads, but I can't remember them. I just remember thinking to myself that I was glad I wasn't investing in the core 5.5e rules.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I like it, but it's bland and boring. I'd much rather see legendary resistance made more unique for the monsters. This monster over here uses it's legendary resistance to reflect the spell back at the caster/group as if it had cast it. That one over there eats the spell to regain health. The...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Yeah. The character and feat changes aren't among the stuff I don't like. It's mostly rule changes.

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

If 5.5e were radically different AND better than 5e, I would switch. That it wasn't radically different and I only liked about half the changes meant it wasn't worth the money to me. I'll pick up books like the new Forgotten Realms book, and probably a few others, but I'm not going to spend...

Resting in them to avoid any encounters at night. They were cast daily, at least once. Sometimes more than once if they wanted to short rest.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

Yes. My players initially picked Rope Trick and then Tiny Hut when they reached high enough level. They used them to avoid a significant portion of the game, which in my opinion is a negative effect. So I banned those spells. I left Magnificent Mansion, because by the time they get that...
