D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

The more this goes on, the more I think I had the right idea in the ‘what does your 6e look like’ thread when I wrote we need a better action economy than action, bonus action, and reaction ;)

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

why is that even a given, if anything it should be a given that it is selling more. You have about the same number of new players, and you have a large portion of your existing players buying the new edition (over a period of time, as their campaigns wrap up). For that matter, 2014 sales grew...

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

so? Should we only have picture books then so a three year old does not feel left out? Requiring a certain level of understanding is not gatekeeping, we do this all the time for all kinds of things so create a game for the illiterate then, not everything has to appeal to the lowest common...

and how many people that run the adventure will know of the video? Having a video in addition is fine by that logic they should have included maps and tokens only It’s one thing to give me the option to make it my own and have a few suggestions how, it is another to force me to because there...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

which specifically says you cast the spell as normal, so… the exception is that you do not release the energy immediately but hang on to it, not how the spell is being cast, and the normal way to cast a spell is to use the Magic action, in fact it is required to cast the spell per the...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

yeah, that is where your confusion comes from. It is not a proper action, it is a meta-action / rider on another action, which is why it makes you choose a proper action you actually take. None of the others do that, because they are actual actions… Ready is just grouped here because it is...

yeah, that is your interpretation, I consider it clearly wrong. This will not get resolved…

you don’t, Ready is not a proper action

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

ok, still much more restrictive than every single spell with casting time action across all levels

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

all it says is that you cast the spell as normal, and the normal way to cast it is to use the Magic action… the exception is that you use concentration to delay the spell’s effect until the trigger occurs

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

as you pointed out a few posts back, the Magic action can be used for other things than just casting spells, so limiting it to casting spells here does not mean it does not take the Magic action to do so, especially. since the spellcasting rules say that the Magic action is required to cast spells

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

it is, and yet you keep getting it wrong by continuing to write You cast it with the Magic action…

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

all of them are specific exceptions for one specific spell. Ready is an ‘exception’ (more like an alternative) for all spells. So no, these are not alike.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

spells with casting time action require the Magic action to be cast

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

there is no exception mentioned that says you use the Ready action to cast this spell. Holding the energy via Concentration is the only part that is spelled out and not normal

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

no, you already cast the spell on your turn, you only release the energy as a reaction. This is why your spell slot is lost even if the trigger never occurs
