how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

Welcome to preference. It's why I said earlier that there is no typical. My preferences are Earthdawn, and of d&d editions it is 3e. Earthdawn doesn't link adepts' "circle" and power directly. And all the commoners who don't have Circles still have half-magic, which lets them listen to...

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

I'm stating basic lore because it's context in a thread not explicitly about Tolkein. This is about settings in general. The fact there are essays on it means there are disagreements on interpretation. And when we are applying it to a kind of game that didn't exist until 20 years after the...

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

That last part describes LotR. Gandalf is the DM PC, who has a bunch of hirelings carry the cursed items, and be distractions or cannon fodder. The Balrog scene is just a way to show how powerful Gandalf is to the players and then bring him back in his "ult" form later, after the PCs leveled...

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

This really is a world/setting design choice. Even within the flavor of a setting, the power-level can be shifted. E.g. Eberron has multiple gateways where evil can emerge at any time. The biggest army that has ever emerged and been defeated was: Low level setting A couple thousand cr0...

    Your group is too big...

This is why our group of 7 plays bi-weekly for 6 hours. Easier to commit because it gives more flexibility to work around other commitments in the future. "Can we take our vacation the other weekend?" It doesn't always work, of course, but with a larger group being one player down isn't as...

D&D 5E (2024) What is With Poison?, and Other PHB Conundrums.

2014phb should have a note in the Holy Water entry in Chapter 5 Adventuring gear...holy water I confess, I'm relying on DDB so for all I know that's not in all printings. Or any printing. These phb rules are in some ways more generous as you don't need the ceremony spell prepped.

    Semi-sensible thousand-year plans?

I like the idea that elves, rather than gods, are why the default d&d setting is unchanging. An elven childhood is a full human lifespan, cradle to grave. The adult elven lifespan exceeds human dynasties, being 5-6 centuries long. When the other races cross some line, the elves spend...

D&D General If we were re-designing the Tiny Hut-esc 'instant shelter' spells what would we change?

3e may have had the golf bag of weapons, but it also has classifications for abilities. Set a clear delineation of "magic" vs "not-magic". Extraordinary - beyond the capabilities of the real world, but not magical in the sense Detect Magic or Anti-Magic affected it. Creatures being able...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

That door is to protect the inhabitants, not the contents. Protecting the contents is a secondary aspect. But since you bring up housing, it does seem like many traps cost more than the house they are in. The OP's multi-use, automatically resetting poison gas trap? That has to cost more...

D&D General If we were re-designing the Tiny Hut-esc 'instant shelter' spells what would we change?

I played a gnome caster who once cast Rope Trick under a throne to hide from guards. You just need to cut the rope short. Since then we put rope trick under tables. Mainly because its really hard to see with detect magic or see invis when it has physical cover and you need to crawl on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

Oh, that's actually covered by the rules. Mage Hand can't make attacks so it can't make a fist and pound on anything.

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

You are not going to like the answer. It's why simulationists get headaches. You see the answer is greater than 11.6lbs but less than infinity. I won't make everyone look at math. Wheee!

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

I know nada about DotMM, but that seems like it should be less about the dungeon and more the various factions either trying to eliminate the resurrecteds or save them. You could have pro/con factions on each side, possibly resulting in demons & harpers working together to oppose paladins & devils.

    D&D 5E (2024) Removing Concentration

Interesting thing is, at tier 3/4 play, those low level buff spells start getting cast on other people again. They become efficient because the melees have more attacks. The casters are less worried about hoarding spell slots, are less concerned about dying in the first fight of the day, are...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

My issue with traps is they are usually out if proportion to the treasure. The dinkiest d4 poison costs 100gp/dose. Yes, yes, not an economic simulator, blah, blah, but as a player I am more likely to make more money stealing the trap than whatever it protects. For the love of sanity people...

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

Something that can lift 10lbs can apply more than 10lbs of force. Why? 10lbs is the force of gravity on a 4.5kg object (0.3 slugs, iirc non-metric unit of mass) So 10lbs of force neutralizes gravity....but that's it. It can't lift it higher. Want to go up? Add more force. I will point out...

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

As a player, I like GoS. My DM is running a blended GoS/Princes of the Apocalypse game. I havent looked at the source material directly but the parts that are clearly GoS are much more enjoyable than the clearly PotA parts. PotA felt like it bent over backwards repeatedly to make short...

    D&D 5E (2024) Level 2 Cantrip Master.

I thought part of 2024 was moving the Magic Initiate feats to the Origin category and only allowing them to be taken at first level in conjunction with a background. We aren't using 2024 so I may be mis-remembering the UA. Magic initiate spells are things you will want to cast most adventuring...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Noe that you point it out, I remember seeing this. To be honest, I thought this was something I saw in a 3rd party product. The "higher level" section is not listed in the main index in ddb so I couldn't find it again. Why did I think it was a 3rd party product? Well, it says that <=10th...
