D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Fifteen wands? Players should have 1 wand. Or maybe its 1 sack of wands. Let me check the books....OH WAIT, WE CAN'T. I wrote this earlier earlier. With no guidance on magic items/wealth by level, GMs have to wing it, and when they get it wrong it's their own fault.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Agreed. 5e makes it easiest (with the possible exception of 4e, which I barely played) melees have enough oomph to make up for the casters being nerfed short+long rests provide a way for characters to heal 150% of their hit points per day, every day, without magic. casters have the least...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

That really depends on lore. 2024 lore says you're wrong. An elf can be born of the pairing of an elf with any other species that can result in offspring. Same goes for dwarves, humans, halflings, orcs, etc. So no, a race doesn't need multiple sexes if there is another species that can...

D&D 5E (2014) When do you short rest?

It really depends. We're in a situation where at first blush short rests are impossible: assaulting a bunch of evil cultists. But ....it's like it was designed to enable short rests. It begs you to take short rests. "Allies" who barely tolerate each other? Check foes who are hyperfocused on...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

Oh yes, the "Sarah McLachlan" glabrezu. Just one soul a month can feed a needy glabrezu. "...eating the arms of an angel..."

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

I do miss the Kali vibe. Sure it involves shoulders that aren't plausible but...demon. This looks like an evil caterpillar to me. And thanks OP. Now I have CruxShadows on repeat in my head all day.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Well there are rules covering equipment and backgrounds are 1st level. For the other levels there are no rules. How many items should they have? What kind of contacts are appropriate? What social structures could exist for them to be part of? What kinds of ties should they have? What...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I don't care if players defeat my enemies. I mean, I kind of expect them to. And I don't care how. Nor do I tune encounters for weeks. I don't try for "the perfect fight". I generally crank the dial up a few ticks past their last fight and move on. I sometimes think "I wonder how they'll...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I see a lot of people who feel like tier 4 must be all plane-hopping. A goblin army proved to be a proper threat at 17th level. And it is a total shame this isn't covered in any WotC book. Many people use wars as hooks to start low level games but it's equally effective to start a higher...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I selected DM burn-out and Other -System support because the two go hand in hand. If there's no adventures at high levels a DM can use as references, the DM is on their own. If there's no guidelines for how much magical gear to have at various levels, the CR system breaks down and the DM is on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Questions about slings

This is a two-handed staff-sling. It will let human of mediocre strength hurl a 1lb (600g) stone about 200ft. A strong person who has practiced extensively can triple that. It is a wooden staff that is about as tall as the user's armpit or ear. This is a smaller 1-handed staff-sling...

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

My personal happy starting spot is 5th level. I'll run a campaign with 1st-5th right when an edition comes out, but otherwise I never bother. For my group who have played multiple systems for multiple decades, that feels like playing the video game tutorial. You need to do it once, but only...

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

7-12th level is where my knee-jerk reaction is to mid-level. Why that range? It brackets 10th level, the literal midpoint of the system. Beyond that, it can't be too wide a spread and 7th level spells don't "feel" like "mid-level" to me so it can't go up to 13.

    D&D 5E (2014) Questions about slings

I'd say re-introduce the staff-sling. Adding another 2-3 feet of moment arm significantly ups the power, so take the damage to d6. And let the staff act as a cudgel in melee. I would also say lead bullets should get a boost over stones. They have less air resistance, hit a smaller area and...

GMs: How Much Do You Curate Your Adventures To Your Specific PCs, Mechanically Speaking

While technically the same as the OP, "spotlighting" feels materially different in nature. One is avoiding their weaknesses, the other is giving their strengths a chance to shine. "Oh no, there's no PC cleric, guess I shouldn't use this necromancer adventure" Vs "Hrmmm, the fighter hasn't...

GMs: How Much Do You Curate Your Adventures To Your Specific PCs, Mechanically Speaking

I'm pure A. I leverage published components maybe 25% of the time, but mostly I keep the mechanics as-is and rewrite the plot. Mechanics changes are generally to fix something dumb, The other 75% of the time the NPCs have resources appropriate to whatever they are and they use them in a way...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Deepspawn Ecosystem.

It's interesting. I feel like it needs a lot more fungi, oozes, puddings and slimes as the "crops" or "livestock".
