D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

It's not even a bad spell at tier 4, there are just more effective spells available. Which means HM becomes the "just in case" or "when in doubt" action since you have 6. Somebody sketchy walk into the tavern? Hunter's Mark Shadowy figure in the forest? Hunter's Mark

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage Spell Scaling

Low level spells can cause damage at higher tiers, but not directly. Stuff like Hideous Laughter that makes foes prone so allies get Advantage or Dissonant Whispers that consume the target's reaction and induce AoOs that cause damage. (Giving the rogue another chance at Sneak Attack or the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage Spell Scaling

I'm on the side of "5e did the right thing by weakening casters". I ran 3e from 1st-23rd level. Having casters able to throw dozens of high damage spells totally eclipsed other classes. Making 1st level spell slots switch to utility because cantrips are worth casting is just fine. There's...

D&D General Campaign idea: Raiders of the Lost Bard

I'd definitely think a couple trips to the feywild would be needed as ageless fey would remember compositions and possibly have the special instruments or even know to make them. There is the Summer Court, Winter Court and the Wilds themselves where hags, dryads, satyr and other music loving...

D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

This is true. Having too many resources left when your allies are tapped out is not good as it turns those extra resources essentially into ribbons. It's like being the one elf in the party who is always volun-told to take 2nd and 3rd watch. Those extra 4 hours a day are just unavailable on...

D&D General What’s the story here?

That's Gipsy Sanctum, the patron saint of Jaegers. It was once a massive golem that fought demons but was destroyed closing a portal. The locals turned Gipsy's remains into a place of worship. A century of devotions , ritual blessings, and a myriad of relics made the structure holy. When...

D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Just going to note here that most caster AoE spells are "openers", meaning you cast at the start of combat before the groups are intertwined because AoEs are unforgiving to allies. However Ranger Volley & Barrage can be "closers" because you get to pick and choose targets. This let's a Ranger...

D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Edit - derp, got confused on weapon masteries. Nothing to see here, move along. This looks wrong. You seem to be using a bonus action to cast Hunter's Mark AND to attack with the scimitar in the same round. That would cut your damage by a third-ish here. If this is a mistake and applied...

Electric Car Ownership - Any Experiences?

It's a necrothread but since I didn't do it, I'll chime in b/c we just bought an 2024 Equinox EV. Good deal between 0% financing, the ev credit, pre-black Friday event and, oddly, a Costco discount. The minivan was turning into a money pit and we wanted to dodge the inevitable price hikes when...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

You're not doing the comparison correctly. In a former life I was a cost estimator for construction projects, so I had to deal with this. The "$20US in NoWheresLandia" involves buying completely different goods. Milled grain, not store-bought bread. A 5hp scooter that can't go faster than...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

That's why I (original poster) didn't say anything about the specifics of what is acquired and only stayed with the relative descriptions baked into Lifestyles. I actually appreciate the Lifestyle Expense mechanism as it let's you abstract it all away without needing an "Aurora's Whole Realm...

    D&D 5E (2024) Intersection of skill & tool proficiencies

Note that is cubic feet, not linear feet. So 90 cubic feet of rock would be less than 1 ft of progress in a 10'w x 10'h tunnel. Think you meant Transmute Rock to Mud or Stoneshape. You mean like the Mattock of the Titans? Or the Lyre of Building?

D&D General Session Zero and Nobody Chose a Spellcaster

Depending on how things go, you should discuss future feats of Leadership and Healer. They aren't as shiny at low levels (though healer's level+4+d6 is never bad) but they really become noticeable at around 8th level. Leadership's 8+Cha temp hit points is akin to a free pre-emptive healing...

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion - Missing Facilities (ie theres no diplomacy!)

Ah yes, the origin of the "Time for another Robin" model used at the Wayne Manor. Rumor is, the lord was a rogue/monk.

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion - Missing Facilities (ie theres no diplomacy!)

I wish "Pub" was "Spy Master" or "Intelligence Network". Then it would have less.....cognitive dissonance.

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion - Missing Facilities (ie theres no diplomacy!)

Not an bad idea to set up a "progression." The pub could start as a Storehouse ("buy wine/ale, sell wine/ale, earn money"), evolve to a Gaming Hall then be (ugh) a "Pub". Although I think they want you to keep the storeroom, add a Gaming Hall, then expand out to a Pub.

    D&D 5E (2024) Enspelled items and marketing

Point. I forgot that aspect of "enspelled" items. Guess most of these should be staves or cudgels.

    D&D 5E (2024) Enspelled items and marketing

It does change a game. Take it from milquetoast to spicy. Doesn't break it though unless the GM "Just Can't Even" Yeah, much like Dancing Lights. ~30gp/scroll in Xanathar That one did change the casting action. The issue with making a wall is that it only works if people don't know...
