    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Player’s Handbook (2024)

This book is going to be one of those that I will have to look through a copy in person before buying. One of the people in my gaming group gets the WOTC books as soon as humanly possible, so I'll spend some time with his copy, at the table, and see if it's something I'm compelled to own. A lot...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I have decreasing interest in it, but my gaming group has been playing D&D 5E weekly for 7 years (with occasional breaks for other games), so I suspect we will segue into 2024 D&D - in whatever way D&D Beyond wants us to. We all use DDB, although I'm moving back to books and paper and pencil...

Grading the Cortex Plus and Cortex Prime System

I fell in love with the Smallville rpg back when, and still love the way that version of Cortex is built: your motivation and relationships matter just as much in task resolution as your skills and powers. I backed the Cortex Prime Kickstarter because of that, and although I think the core...

    Kickstarter Deal-Breakers (Poll)

My choices: Slapdash or poorly-written. This is an immediate nope for me. There was a recent project for some game about sentient apes, but in every instance where they should have said "apes" they used the word "monkeys". As intrigued as I was by the concepts, if they can't get that right...

The Fantastic Four Casting and New Release Date Revealed by Marvel Studios

Ben is reading what looks very much like the December 13, 1963 issue of LIFE Magazine.

How Quickly Do You Bounce Off a System?

One of the first things I look for in a new (to me) game is the character sheet. If I can't get a sense of what the game is about from that - the contents, the layout, the approach, the style, etc - then I will probably move on. I figure if the character sheet makes the game look like...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

It's mostly been Kickstarters, and the most recent few, in order of most recent to less recent, are: A $5 set of 2 plastic, unpainted thri-kreen minis, for the fighter I'm playing in a ftf 5E game right now. Dungeon Illumination - 100 light sources for fantasy dungeoncrawl roleplaying games...

    Your best live action Superman?

I thought Brandon Routh was very good as Clark Kent, and his performance as Superman was solid, but for me he never looked quite right as Superman. I have similar feelings about Tyler Hoechlin - his look as Supemran doesn't quite work for me, but his performance is very good.

    Your best live action Superman?

Christopher Reeve, without a doubt. I love Henry Cavill in the role, and wish he had gotten his own sequel and/or a director who liked the character.

D&D 5E (2014) Vecna: Eve of Ruin Coming May 21st!

That's a lot of settings to be hopping around in, but the inclusion of Greyhawk has me excited. I don't have any real connection to Greyhawk, but the fact that they're using it suggests they'll use it more in the future. I'm curious to see what they do with it, to make it distinct.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC Reveals The Confirmed Release Dates of 2024's D&D Slate

Should I take the release date of the DMG being right before my birthday as a sign? If so, as a sign of what?

So, what is your Favorite "Villain" race these days?

It occurs to me that I haven't used villain races for decades. I think the last time was when I was running a MERP game and there were Tolkien orcs to kill without remorse*. * I know that during or after writing LOTR, Tolkien struggled with whether orcs were inherently evil and therefore ripe...

    Grading the Rolemaster/Spacemaster System

I would love a chance to play RM2E or MERP again, face-to-face, for more than a one-shot at a con.

    Grading the Rolemaster/Spacemaster System

We played a lot of RM and SM back when they were new, and well into the 90s. For me, MERP was the best version, paring things down nicely and providing some of the best maps any rpg has ever had. The skill-specific success tables was the one level of crunch (in the vast world of RM crunch)...

    Do TTRPGs Need to "Modernize?"

I am highly opposed to losing limited resources (spell slots, for instance) on things that wind up doing nothing. I guess I just don't get the point. If you want to emulate fiction where a character dramatically fails, there's usually reasons for that failure set up earlier, and dramatic payoff...

D&D 5E (2024) Size, Carrying Capacity, Strength, Athletics, Mobility

What if your Strength was your Size? As in (using 5E terms) Tiny creatures default to having a Strength of 1, Small have 2, Medium have 3, etc. Adjust granularity to suit the genre/subgenre, or tone. Creatures that are unusual strong for their size might have a Strength that's their size +1.

    D&D 5E (2024) Speculation Welcome: What's Next for D&D?

It will be very interesting to see what kind of release schedule WOTC goes with for this 2024 edition, once the core books are out, and how that balances with digital releases.
