D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Easily solved by making them unable to be made. Or just blow the prices up through the roof. Sure it has a price, but there are so few who can make it, and those really don't want to be bothered to make it, that the Flaming Sword you want is 50,000 gold. I've long felt that the 5e prices...

Oh, sure. Make ME the one that seems long winded. I'm the concise guy around here! Find your own schtick.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

While it wouldn't really bother me, this would add too much complexity for WotC to be comfortable with and also a lot of players. "My PC has two abilities that refresh when I take a breather(5 minute rest), one that refreshes on a short rest(one hour), two that come back after a long rest(8...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

What fix?! It can't be fixed. They either do their best to mitigate it a bit, or they scrap the most popular edition they've ever had and hope the next edition is as good. Which do you think the corporate choice is going to be?

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yeah. We argue here and debate endlessly about how things are/should/best done, but at the end of the day, if your group is having a good time, you're doing it right.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes. If you notice, I didn't say it was always better to use a 5th level spell. Only that by and large it is. There are odd exceptions.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I haven't seen them try to fix it. 5.5e did improve encounter difficulty, but the balance is still around resource attrition with large bags of hit points to fight against. Basically, it's a bit of mitigation, rather than an attempt to fix the issue. The only fix that I can see is a new...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

That's what it means when I say they made a mistake, yes. What is not their fault, is people CHOOSING not to follow the design. WotC is not responsible for your(general you) choices. There's fault on both sides of this. We don't know if the playtesters consistently ignored the rules or not...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I didn't say that they did nothing!!! :P I've just found that by and large, casting a 5th level spell is going to be more effective than upcasting a 1st level spell to 5th level.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Mearls is working on his own game right now and since that started he has been highly vocal against WotC. Not that what he has been saying is wrong, but the way he has been saying it has been inflated and even sometimes pretty hyperbolic. That makes this "admission" suspect from the get go...

They also upcast spells a lot. I'm not a fan of upcasting lower level spells. The small extra increases end up being less than if you just cast a spell of the level you are upcasting to.

Yep. Several times they've been running on cantrip fumes before they get to rest.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yeah. I'm currently listening to the Mighty Nein in my car when I drive. They rarely rest after a fight. They just continue on and sometimes get into several more fights before they eventually take a rest.

They're common because the players can get away with it.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

In my game PCs are one of a kind special. There may be 1000 bards in the world, but the PC bard is Taylor Swift. There may be 10000 fighters in the world, but the PC fighter is Inigo Montoya. The reason I do that is because PCs are fated above and beyond normal "athletes or actors," which is...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

There are reasons, but not good ones. The 5 minute workday has become a thing because 1) DMs are out there that don't run a world that moves outside of the PCs, and 2) because those players would rather be handed an automatic easy win than actually have a moderate challenge. Or..........just...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Show me where it says that? In the PHB it talks about interrupted rests, so clearly if they feel entitled to resting free of risk, they are ignoring the rules. In the DMG it talks about random encounters. It even mentions those as reasons why PCs don't dawdle around. And advises not resting...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Their are people who believe the world if flat, too. Belief doesn't equate to being correct, and those players would be wrong. I don't run a meat grinder. I'm not a stingy DM. My encounter design isn't bad if I figure out that the cultists notice 6 dead bodies in the room where they get their...
