I see. Yeah, that's pretty bad then. I'd run it as Dex save to initlially avoid, then Con saves to end the condition if the initial Dex save failed. Or maybe the challenge rating just needs to be amped up a tad...

I haven't seen the full stat block. I assume the tentacles need to hit to trigger this affect? Or is this the main attack? If the later, I see why they went with the Dex save for triggering the initial condition, but subsequent saves really should be Con to resist the poison. Weird.

I had the same thought. You get to the "Creating a Creature" section of the DMG and it starts with: Use the approaches and examples in the following sections to build custom creatures for your game. "Oh boy, let's dig in!" 2 pages on how to modify stat blocks and add traits later...

The problem with defaulting to generic NPC blocks for many of the humanoids (especially playable ones) is they all become vanilla. Yes, I can re-skin, but that's putting the onus on me. Species-specific statblocks allow you to introduce flavor - e.g., a drow guard having unique abilities...

A "Book of Villainy" is one way to introduce NPC statblocks for intelligent humanoids that are meant to be fought. Evil drow, orcs, humans, elves, etc.

Perhaps they will put out a expansion book focused on humanoid statblocks and classes ("Book of Humanoids"). For each species, they could have a several statblocks that represent different NPC roles, similar to the Appendix, but more in depth by species. Or maybe this is a product for the DM...

Personally, I'd rather the MM include stat blocks for all the humanoids (including humans, elves, gnomes, dwarves, etc., ala the 1e MM), but that's just me. I view it as an opportunity to explore the unique cultures for each species - for example, the differences between wood elves, high-elves...

This is still my favorite monster lore book.
