Would/should there need to be a different total number to start at for different classes? Should a fighter get more starting HP than a mage? Would this lead to taking a level of fighter to start with 1200 and then go mage if mage only started with 800? Another thing a smart party might do...

At some point, I just allow this with the new rules. If disabling a trap is a DC15 and you are trained in Sleight of Hand and have Thieves' Tools, then you get advantage to the check. A rogue would likely also have expertise in the skill, so at some point I just say you can do this.

I did notice these under Search and Study. I also see this with searching for things. I find that I tend to just have one search check, usually a Perception check to notice things, but Investigation for picking things up and opening drawers and poking and prodding things.

I would go with the one that you think others will now more. I have never seen Carl before, though I'm not into those books. I am watching the Alien show, but not sure how many at the party would know. Although it might just come across as something scarry and then be ok for Halloween...

I have not read all of the booklets and plots yet, but got the impression that the article was rather close to the books in that it just points to specific quests rather than more open.

Henchmen also go a long way to deter all these things or at least to make life more comfortable while doing it. A bit like in the movies where locals are carrying giant tents and things like tables and chairs for the rich explorers. Or at least like people climbing Mt Everest.
