D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

Would/should there need to be a different total number to start at for different classes? Should a fighter get more starting HP than a mage? Would this lead to taking a level of fighter to start with 1200 and then go mage if mage only started with 800? Another thing a smart party might do...

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

Also need to consider a player who wants to change characters or when a friend wants to join for a night and the PCs are 5th level. Would you start off at the rest of the party's average HP or just let them be like monsters and have normal HP.

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

Maybe the player can just choose to ignore something and take away HP. At first level you have the normal 10ish HP and get into something like a fight. You get hit and choose to take one away and ignore things. You get more at 2nd level to add to what you have remaining. This means that...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

I tend to use a sliding DC scale if the players are more engaged or it they just want to make a check. If the players can use their words to make me think they are doing something better than I think 'searching a room' is, then I lower the DC a couple. I might also lower the DC if I think...

AD&D 1E What is the cost of one night at an Inn?

I noticed the new 5e box set just has gold and nothing else. Might be to keep things simple or to use the gold cardboard chits, but it just as well be an arbitrary system. The menu it comes with has an ale for a gold and a piece of cake for a gold, but you can do a quest to melt down some old...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024: Is disabling a trap now automatic?

At some point, I just allow this with the new rules. If disabling a trap is a DC15 and you are trained in Sleight of Hand and have Thieves' Tools, then you get advantage to the check. A rogue would likely also have expertise in the skill, so at some point I just say you can do this.

TTRPG players wanted for online psychology study

I stopped after needing to click off the 5th time on the whoosies and whatsies the study is. I did like the part of needing normal-to-corrected vision.

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

I was thinking the same for Perception for noticing the scrape marks on the floor where the bookcase looks like it swings open. So now the players know/think there is a secret door there and must roll an Investigation check to determine that you push a book, or there is a latch, or even just...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

I did notice these under Search and Study. I also see this with searching for things. I find that I tend to just have one search check, usually a Perception check to notice things, but Investigation for picking things up and opening drawers and poking and prodding things.

    Costumes and Cosplay

I would go with the one that you think others will now more. I have never seen Carl before, though I'm not into those books. I am watching the Alien show, but not sure how many at the party would know. Although it might just come across as something scarry and then be ok for Halloween...

D&D General "Minor" Item, Major Benefit

Decanter of Endless Water; We managed to use this so many different ways over the years. We turned on the geyser mode to propel out rowboat, both to escape from chasing bad guys and to quickly cross a moat without being seen. We geysered the fire elemental endangering the town. We used it to...

Dungeons & Dragons Provides Guidance on How to Run Heroes of the Borderlands As More Traditional Campaign

I have not read all of the booklets and plots yet, but got the impression that the article was rather close to the books in that it just points to specific quests rather than more open.

D&D 5E (2024) Did Vampires just become more of a problem?

Vampire Jelly Cube. I picture it reaching out to or drawing in a victim and biting them with a dissolving corpse head already in it. Might not be big on planning though.

    RPG Evolution: Minor Inconveniences

Henchmen also go a long way to deter all these things or at least to make life more comfortable while doing it. A bit like in the movies where locals are carrying giant tents and things like tables and chairs for the rich explorers. Or at least like people climbing Mt Everest.
