D&D General The rapier in D&D

Dungeonscape was Feb 2007, Jason Bulmahn and Rich Burlew (hey, Order of the Stick!). Neat. We never used that one. I do recall Grave Strike, now that you mention it. You'd generally have to give up attacking with your off hand to wield the wand, and engage in wandsploitation (1st level wands...

D&D General The rapier in D&D

It's hyperbolic. But undead, constructs, elementals and oozes were common enough that it was a substantial handicap for rogues. Plus I recall there being a magic armor property which could negate crits and sneak attack, so you might be similarly handicapped against BBEGs who would otherwise be...

OSR [Old School Essentials] Advanced Fantasy Races?

The Gargantua from Carcass Crawler 1 is basically one with the serial numbers filed off, no? And the Ogre from Fiendish Friends or Half-Giant from the Dark Sun book are alternative takes.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Hence my writing "only a few", in comparison to characters who have so many that a Paladin's class limit of 10 was considered a substantial handicap. :) ...and if you give class levels to a Frost Giant they're a lot more powerful than a human of equivalent level too. Still rather irrelevant...

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

Yeah, the OSR had been slowly gaining steam from ~2001 or 2002 up to that point, but the big change that 4E represented meant a lot of folks were ready to jump ship once it hit. Either to 3.75 (Pathfinder) or back in time. Yes, there's a lot of text continuity from 1E to 2E to 3E in the spell...

What Makes Something A "Classic"? EDIT: TO YOU

I guess there has to be some combination of good writing and timeless subject matter. That the work contains insights, whether frightening or profound or humorous, which are sufficiently universal to the human experience that successive generations still recognize and are moved by them. As...

King Kubrick: Ranking Stanley's Best Films

He explained what he meant by it in the passage you quoted. Big budget studio spectacle films which were part of a larger set of related/similar movies over a couple of decades, and in which the auteurial style of an individual director might be reduced in impact/distinctiveness because they...

D&D General The rapier in D&D

I remember the same. In 2E they were pretty marginal, and 2E used supplements to support all kinds of settings and historical periods, so there was no uproar over them. Once they made them core in 3E and gave them excellent stats, they started to be controversial.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

At what level can an AD&D fighter without any magic items detect secret doors just by walking past them, see in the dark, and live for a thousand years? 1st, if he's an elf. The idea of different species having superhuman powers as a baseline before we even touch character levels isn't exactly...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

And while you would probably have to wait until high level to get epic stuff like a Hammer of Thunderbolts to approach Mjolnir, even Thor's only got a few items, and at that level AD&D characters are bedecked with magic like a particularly gaudy Christmas tree.

I think Remathilis meant source of concern in the same sense we're seeing in this thread. That they don't fit the period feel/envisioned tech level lots of folks have for D&D, and that they unbalance the game by elevating Dex further as a god stat and devaluing Strength.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Why did the hipster burn his mouth on his pineapple pizza? Perhaps because my mother has celiac and I've had multiple partners with dietary issues, I've always considered asking about dietary preferences, allergies and restrictions a mandatory part of hospitality. If your food is no good for...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Kind of depends. By the mid levels you're typically carrying a lot more magic items than a comic book Asgardian.

    Our Physical Fitness

Thursday night I got in a good hard session. Three circuits of dumbbell bench, inclined curls, and skull crushers, with drop sets on the bench and curls, three sets of overhead shoulder press with drop sets, and three sets of face pulls. Had some good tricep and upper back soreness...

You can run any of the total numbers through this to get a ballpark estimate: https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm Though equating that to another currency obviously complicates matters, because exchange rates vary.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

I largely agree, although we know that Gary and co were very interested in history, but also limited in what books they had access to in part due to limits of the local library when they were first writing. For example, I understand that his use of Charles Ffoulkes' 1909 Armour & Weapons...

D&D General The rapier in D&D

If you want to get persnickity, 1e uses "sword, long" in the PH weapon tables, uses "long sword" as two words everywhere else in the PH, and uses all three forms in the DMG (though I'll concede the two word variation is most common). :) Good observation.
