Yep. The sniper build wasn't nearly as fun in ME2 and 3 as it was in 1, what with the very game-y level design of the newer games, so getting to say "you can't hurt me now, and now I'm immediately right in your face, and now I'm shooting you in the face with my shotgun" just felt nicer in general.
