D&D General The rapier in D&D

With all the ridiculousness in D&D, I am fascinated that rapiers are where OP draws the line. But I guess each of us has our bridge too far.

D&D 5E (2024) ADHD Medication Design Challenge: Let's skin this cat.

I hope the medication works out for you - balancing new meds is always tricky and usually takes time, as I'm sure you know. I don't envy the transition period. I voted for magic items, as I think they have the largest audience and your stuff is always really good.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Anything that leads to this much litigation is way too much rules lawyering for me, reinforcing my immediate inclination to just say "no." Arguing on forums is fine, but if there's one thing I hate, it's arguing about rules when we could be playing the game. The OP seems obviously against RAI...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tinkering with the Monk

The 2024 monk is very strong indeed; I think your tweak won't change much, though. The patient defence upgrade isn't until level 10, which most campaigns don't reach, and even then the PD upgrade is worth, at that level, 11 temp HP on average whereas your buff to the HP die adds 10 permanent HP...

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

Yeah, mine is going into Exandria, Eastern Dwendalian Empire I think. As far as I can tell, it is setting agnostic.

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

Yeah, I've read more of it and I think they really hit the mark. I'm fine with it being written for younger players; as a veteran DM I totally revamp premade materials anyway, so it is less work for me to build something up without having to tear it all down first. For example, I will be using...

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

It is on Maps, though interestingly it's no longer called Maps on the campaign page. Instead, it asks if you want to go to the VTT.

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes on the Borderlands Review

I'm still going through it, but loving what I'm seeing! It's very sand-boxy! The descriptions are brief and easy to grasp, and there is a lot of scope to make it your own. The digital assets are very well thought through. For example, when you upload a map, you have the option of uploading a...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I'd be a hard no. I hate rules lawyering and this is clearly not rules as intended.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I think that WotC should have a wealth of DDB data on how often each skill is rolled, and should recalibrate the distribution of skills to make them much more balanced in their utility. I suspect that if you consolidated all of the knowledge skills into one skill (call it "Lore"), it would get...

D&D General Forgotten Realms - why do you still like running games here? +

There are quite a few classic adventures set there, most particularly Lost Mine of Phandelver, and it's a good, fairly generic high fantasy setting which makes it easy to plug and play.

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

This is a pretty common house rule. I use it in my home games, where everyone rolls actual dice, but it doesn't work as well with my beginner campaign at school, where everyone is on DDB.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

Yet this thread did go there, and for good reasons - we were debating whether it would make sense for characters to know the specific strengths and weaknesses of different coloured dragons just because their players know. I am sure the mods will step in if they feel we've lost the plot, but any...

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

That's how I play them. And it's in keeping with the flavour text in the current MM, if that matters: I don't have the new KotB yet, but I hope there aren't too many nothics, because: A) I only have four miniatures! B) They strike me as being loner types, except in special circumstances.

D&D General Kitchen sink setting or narrow genre focus for long-running campaigns (2,5,10+ years)

I use Exandria as my base setting and modify it as needed, so definitely kitchen sink.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I was with you until this last point. You seem to be suggesting that the game keep alignments but frame them as, essentially, political ideologies. Which I think would turn alignment wars up to eleven.

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

What are we even arguing about? That D&D used to treat some species as disposable villains, especially during the TSR era, is pretty inarguable. Obviously, there were exceptions, but as a rule the baddies were identifiable on sight. It also seems pretty obvious that the game has moved in the...

    Spoilers Alien: Earth Spoiler Thread

I understand that's their attempt at justifying bad writing. The reality is that following basic safety protocols in any situation is a lot cheaper than wasting crews and spaceships, let alone labs next to where you live that are handling anything dangerous. They don't even follow the basic...

    Spoilers Alien: Earth Spoiler Thread

K, I'm caught up. I'm quite enjoying this series, except that the writing consistently falls back on the lazy, if very typically Alien, trope of scientists behaving incredibly stupidly, which takes me out of my suspension of disbelief. Like, "here's a lab containing a number of horrifically...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

Everyone's taste is different. I enjoy roleplaying. Do you also get impatient when actors pretend to be the character they are playing rather than themselves? Because that's all players are doing when they try to avoid metagaming. As for "no objective way to know...", sure there is. They can...
