Would ACKS be a good fit to capture the BECMI-feel?

There are dozens of alternatives in terms of the BE part of BECMI, but I was thinking about it, and I'm not aware of options for the CMI parts. Pretty much the entire OSR movement is based around replacing the B/X editions of the game, but higher level stuff for domain play or master level play...

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

This isn't surprising in any way because (as so many of you have said): money. I'm just wondering what kind of game BG4 will actually be. If we're talking anything similar to BG3, it will require years of development and may be used to transition to a full-on 6E. That's how long these games take...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

I will second this: I think it's an excellently designed game. But I'll give the caveat that you have to buy in for players to build some of that world lore. The game does, however, talk about that pretty openly. Wildsea is one of the games that I really recommend (especially for the look, it's...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

Since this is an issue I talk about all the time, I'll post the three questions for RPG design. If you can't easily answer these questions, you're gonna' have a bad time: What is the game about? How does it achieve that? What behaviors does it reward? It's funny because I've seen a lot of...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

The biggest issue I've seen is when someone wants to design a game, but has only played a handful of games, or even one. I'd say I've seen dozens of people come in saying how their game is unique because it doesn't have classes and levels and is entirely skill-based. Or that it uses 2d6 rather...

A note for my Foundry friends out there: v1.0 of the Foundry module for DaggerHeart was just released. Of course it needs v13 of Foundry, which I haven't upgraded to yet, but this may prompt me to do this. So have more VTT fun. Note: I believe this is already an option for Roll20, so if that's...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Oh of course! As long as you're having fun, no complaints there. The issue I have is when someone says the suggestions for spending Fear for an encounter are bad, and that they're more than suggestions, I think they're making the assumption that the game wants to tell you how to run or play the...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Exactly! I think there's a strange pattern with DaggerHeart where people are coming up with very stringent ways to play or not play the game. Maybe this is people coming from more traditional games? If you want to put an OSR spin on it, great! Run it as if you were playing 5E? Awesome! Play as a...

Let me just add one more thing: I have played and run the adventure "The Lost City" more times than I can count, from B/X days to 5E. I think you could take that and get it to run with DaggerHeart really well.

I think you can run it with the mentality you're comfortable with, and make use of some of the narrative elements when you feel comfortable with them. I've played a bunch of OSR style games, even though it's not my preferred playstyle, and the central element I get from them as you present a...

I've run the Quick Start and it was decent as these sorts of things are. There is also a supplement about the location for the adventure which lets you expand on it a bit. I have heard third parties are making adventures, but haven't seen any yet. I am sure someone will come along with more...

    Draw Steel News

Well I was thinking that the six plus included it, but you're correct. You'll learn more about the game than from anywhere else. These streams were so long that I was only able to watch about half of one before finishing my work. I am in a rotation to patch servers that I control every few...

    Draw Steel News

I think people have already done a good job describing the game, but I really am enjoying DaggerHeart, and I am enjoying reading Draw Steel. The difference between the two is that Draw Steel is much crunchier and grid/minis game. I loved 4E, and I think of Draw Steel as developing along those...

That's not the way I'm reading it. You called the rules terrible earlier, and as guidelines, they're not. They're really useful as a starting point for the GM for different kinds of encounters. Are there places to go after that? I sure think so. I get the impression you're saying "spend Fear to...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

Reading the rules and the Auteur is seeing the game as a tale being told later on in a tavern, so they can sort of break the fourth wall. Love this, although I can see others would hate it. I would play this character in a second!

Fabula Ultima (JRPG-styled ttrpg) is prelaunching a KickStarter for hardback covers and a huge bestiary

This is awesome. This game is good enough that I've gotten physical books for it, so I'm excited.

I have no idea where this perspective comes from. Here's what the book says about spending Fear: That sounds pretty clear to me: it's a rough guide that you can take or leave. And, from my experience running and playing the game, I think it's reasonable. The Fear you spend in a scene gives it...

Dungeons & Dragons Teams Up With New Holland For New Beer

I'm kind of glad to see people are just enjoying or having a laugh at this one. The slot machine branding seems to have genuinely upset some folks. Enjoy this one or let others have fun if it's not your thing.

    Starting Daggerheart campaign. Any pitfalls?

As a player, just make sure to keep everyone included in the game. In combat, vocal and dramatic players can seize more control than in traditional games because of Initiative, so watch for that and say "hey, <quiet player> what are you doing?" if the GM or other players don't.

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

RIght now I'm here for DaggerHeart and Draw Steel.
