D&D General Has 5e become noise?

Well, yeah. If you aren't using the material, there's not a whole lot of reason to care about it. But that has little to do with there being a lot of the content, and more with just not having a use for it.

What are you reading in 2025?

Yeah, but filtering effects carry across the years. We don't have great statistics from back in the 70s. But, what we can find doesn't support the idea of dramatic culture-wide changes. The Bureau of Justice National Crime Survey, for example, shows that the victimization rate for rape...

What are you reading in 2025?

Always consider statistical effects - in this case, our personal gaming experiences, and the reporting you'd see on EN World, are probably going to have been subject to a heavy selection bias. Like, I was a nerd, but a "good kid" when I started playing in the 80s. Other boys who talked like...

I think it is time for a break.

I haven't ever taken a 100% break from gaming entirely - they were all breaks from parts of the hobby. And they were not for the purpose of restoring my joy, though refreshing was part of the effect. Some years back now, a combination of people here at EN World being... really bad, and...

It's the End of the World As We Know It: Apocalyptic Campaign Settings

Um, I need an "and" option for my upcoming game. The PCs are on a colony world. A war starts on Earth, with the implication of magically enhanced nuclear weapons used. The colony, barely self-sufficient, still recovering from a natural disaster, is cut off. And the thing that started the...

Maybe you didn't realize it, but yeah, you kinda were saying that. It is implied by the construction.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

And I am telling you that is exactly wrong. There is more room for fiat in a move-based game, because resolving everything that is not a move is a GM fiat decision!

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

Um, no. That's kind of nonsense, and is the road to ruin. "You cannot address ethical issues unless you are a saint," is a great way to race to the bottom. That logic has two problems, one of which is a logical fallacy. First, the world is such that a consumer cannot, even in principle...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Um, mamba? No. You see, the basic way to resolve an action that isn't a move IS GM FIAT! When a player declares an action that isn't a move, the GM simply decides what happens, and changes the fiction in a small way to give the players something new to respond to. In AW lingo this is a GM's...

ChatGPT lies then gaslights reporter with fake transcript

Blame? Oh, there is sooooo much blame to go around. We can blame the dunderhead who made the tool, for not considering the knock-on effects. We can blame the greedy executives who chose to try to make profit off the tool at the expense of those harmed by it. We can blame the shoddy tool for...

With respect, it is not the victim's job or responsibility to bridge gaps to the abuser.

D&D General Nolzur creates inclusive miniatures, people can't handle it.

Unfortunately, this was very probably malice, an attempt to get folks riled up. The new starter set, Heroes of the Borderlands, has an NPC in a wheelchair, and that has inflamed some folks over in some corners of social media all over again. But, the point remains, if someone's pretty clearly...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

But, this is inaccurate. The typical thing for a playbook is, you, the player, narrate trying to do whatever you want. If/when what you are trying to do matches a move, then we roll dice for the move.

Mod note: This personal jab of an opening is... not good for you. It suggests to us that you are willing to tear folks down to be seen as "correct", and to heck about how people who disagree might feel. So, dial it back, please.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

So, upthread I mentioned that I don't think I think much about mechanics being modern or not, but that design might deserve that kind of consideration. I think that still holds, for me, but let me also write this, and see where it goes... It can be said that design is where engineering meets...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Insert Cheesecake Factory analogy here. It seems to me that D&D is doing pretty well, all things considered. I said that designers have to make choices - but that doesn't mean they have to double-down into one single thing we'd identify as a specific playstyle.
