D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Mod note: Um, Micah? Please note that we have a separate forum for Level Up, and another for D&D Variants. So, while you cam mention them, please realize that you should not dominate discussion with them here.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

You said you weren't buying it. How, on this good green Earth, do you buy that which isn't for sale? Which is to say, there is a sort of implied relationship in that ohrasing, that those with differing opinions are supposed to or are trying to "sell you" on their ideas. I am pushing back on...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Yes, but the statistics suck. There are only relative handful of people here, and we self-select for particular discussions. Listening to us talk doesn't tell you anything about the greater gaming world. Forgetting that is a good way to come to very incorrect conclusions, and getting into a...

What is your favourite part of TTRPGing?

No single thing for all games. I come to different tables for different things.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

We aren't selling. We are offering our own thoughts, FOR FREE. Take 'em, or not, no skin off our noses.

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

It isn't really about his family, though. It is about the entire species that is going to die if he doesn't return. And, if he's going to do that, he ought to stick around and teach the Great Link that not all "solids" are a-holes, and that the Founders were largely the architects of their...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Mod Note: Hey there. Retroactively changing the discussion because you didn't think of some things others might, and insulting people in the process, looks a lot like you want to get removed from the discussion you started. All in all - starting a thread doesn't mean you own it, or get to...

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Interestingly, Odo does tell his real family to take a hike, what with them being racist despots out for galactic domination and among the main villains of the series. Mora was found family, and still sucked. :p

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

I want to add - the episode with Dr. Mora is the worst thing that show ever produced. Saying Mora wasn't "particularly gentle about it" is a polite understatement. Mora used painful electric shocks on infant Odo to get him to do things - if you did that to your kid on Earth, we'd call that...

    D&D General Games Economies

Well, there's a major question about how much sense money actually makes in the real world, too. Money is a matter of consensual reality, not some objective measures of value.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

And, by the way, in speaking about the whole pendulum swing thing... Fate Core (and Fate Accelerated, which hasn't been part of the discussion) came out in 2013, and Fate in general is even older.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

A lot of the difference is explication, explanation, and examples. F'rex, The Fate Core rules takes 40 pages to talk about skills and stunts, giving a paragraph about each skill, examples of how each skill might be used with each of the four basic game actions, and providing the full text of 3...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Um, careful there. First, that's 310 digest pages, instead of the more common 8"x10" RPG rulebook pages. More importantly, Fate Condensed is mechanically pretty much the same, and comes in at only 60 pages. Which is to say, a whole lot of that 310 pages isn't core mechanical complexity.

What are you reading in 2025?

Started on Dungeon Crawler Carl, by Matt Dinniman. I expected monsters getting slaughtered. I didn't expect Dinniman to put the depth to the ethics and feelings around it.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Neither did they, because that isn't what they said. Willfully restating other people's positions incorrectly is disrespectful. Please don't.

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

Mod Note: "I will not believe you unless you pinkie swear on your mother's grave," is incredibly insulting. And it isn't like their swearing means anything unless you trust them in the first place, which you obviously don't. Believe them, or not. If you don't trust them to be sincere, try...

    Post Apocalypse Settings

It isn't about having world building. It is about how RPG designers don't have expertise to do decent sociology simulation.

    Post Apocalypse Settings

Both what? Be a documentary and a Swayze movie? Everyone and their grandmother thinks they are sociologists enough to claim their post-apocalypse is how it would "really" work. I don't buy it.

    Post Apocalypse Settings

I have to start with this: Red Dawn was not a documentary - it was a Patrick Swayze movie. It is a documentary in the same way Dirty Dancing was a documentary. And, this, for me, was the problem with TW2000, back in the day (and perhaps today - I haven't followed the game's updates). It was...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

It makes sense, but it describes a game that does not offer what I, at least, want in crunch-heavy play. Doing my analysis and decisions on y own, outside a session of play, where there is no immediately unfolding situation, isn't what I'm looking for.
